Casual wedding attire for men is a collared shirt with proper trousers, plus shoes you'd polish. I'd start with a navy unstructured blazer over a light blue oxford with tan chinos. On a hot day, lose the jacket and wear linen. The tie is optional. Shorts aren't.
I think "casual" is the dress code guys misread most, and nearly always by dressing down too far. For the full ladder from black tie to beach, the men's wedding guest outfit guide has it. Here it's casual only, with outfits by venue and season.

Unstructured blazer, oxford shirt, chinos, suede loafers. Casual that still photographs well.
TL;DR
- Garden or backyard: navy unstructured blazer, light blue oxford, tan chinos, brown penny loafers. No tie.
- Summer or beach-adjacent: linen shirt with light cotton or linen trousers and suede loafers. Jacket optional.
- Fall barn or vineyard: olive sport coat, knit polo, grey wool trousers, suede chukka boots.
- Indoor restaurant or city venue: grey or navy trousers, a crisp shirt and a fine merino sweater or blazer.
- Shorts or jeans: only when the couple says so in writing.
What casual means for a male wedding guest
Casual means you don't need a suit or a tie. It doesn't mean grocery-run clothes. Think cotton or linen trousers with a button-down or a knit polo on top. A blazer is optional. It's also the quickest way to look like you tried.
Casual sits one step below dressy casual. At dressy casual the jacket is close to expected; at casual it's your call. Both sit below semi-formal and formal, where a matching suit becomes the floor.
When the card says casual and the venue is a church, I still bring a jacket. You can take it off at the reception. You can't conjure one in the parking lot.
A casual wedding in a restaurant's private room or a brewery lands closer to dinner out. Wear navy or charcoal trousers with a crisp shirt, then a blazer or a fine-gauge sweater over it. Shoes stay leather. Dark denim can pass when the invitation is truly relaxed, and I'd only wear it with a jacket.
Garden or backyard wedding: blazer, oxford, chinos
This is the outfit I'd reach for first: an unstructured navy blazer in cotton or a linen blend, with a light blue oxford button-down and tan chinos. Brown penny loafers finish it. A cream pocket square is enough decoration.

Navy blazer and tan chinos. The jacket comes off once the toasts are done.
Grass is the catch. Leather soles sink and slip on a lawn, so loafers with a rubber or crepe sole are kinder for a long afternoon. Belt and shoes in the same brown.
Summer heat: linen shirt, light trousers, suede loafers
In July sun the jacket usually ends up on a chair anyway. A long-sleeve linen shirt in pale blue, white or sand with off-white or stone cotton trousers looks deliberate. Roll the sleeves twice, not up past the elbow. Tan suede loafers, no socks or invisible ones.

Linen wrinkles by noon. That's fine at a casual wedding.
Keep the shirt tucked if the trousers have belt loops. An untucked camp-collar shirt can work at a beach reception, but check the wedding website first. A short-sleeve shirt reads more vacation than wedding unless the couple is clearly going that way.
Fall barn or vineyard: sport coat and boots
Cooler months push casual toward texture. An olive or brown cotton-wool sport coat over a cream knit polo or an oxford shirt, with mid-grey wool trousers and suede chukka boots, suits a barn or a vineyard. Boots also handle gravel paths better than thin loafers.

Olive and grey for an October barn. Brown suede holds up on gravel.
A fine merino crewneck under the sport coat is another route when it's cold. Bring an overcoat or a waxed jacket for the walk between ceremony and reception, because outdoor fall evenings drop fast.
What not to wear to a casual wedding
Graphic tees and athletic shorts are out. So are gym sneakers and flip-flops. Anything ripped or faded too.
All white can compete with the couple. A full black suit and tie can look like you misread the card. And cargo pockets read as hiking.
Jeans are the grey zone. If the couple wrote "jeans welcome" or the wedding website shows denim, go ahead with a dark, clean pair. Otherwise chinos are the safer bet.
Try the blazer and chinos on your photo first
Casual gives you more combinations to choose from, which makes picking harder. On TryAnyOutfit, add a photo of yourself and a photo or screenshot of the outfit, and the preview goes on your real photo, not an avatar. The Jacket worn open chip helps when the blazer is the piece you're unsure about.

It shows how the look reads on you. It won't tell you your size or how linen drapes, so check the shop's measurements before you order. It runs on phones (iPhone and Android) and in the web Studio, with credits shared. It's cheap to start; current options are on the pricing page. Uploaded photos are auto-deleted after 72 hours unless you save them.
If the groomsmen are wearing the exact navy you were planning, switch the jacket color. That's the whole problem in how I picked a blazer for a winter wedding. For every other dress code, go back to the men's wedding guest outfit guide.

Frequently asked questions

Proper trousers such as chinos or linen trousers, a collared shirt or knit polo, and leather or suede shoes. A blazer is optional and a tie is not needed.
Can men wear jeans to a casual wedding?
Only if the couple says jeans are welcome. Then wear a dark, clean pair with a jacket and leather shoes. Otherwise chinos are safer.
Do I need a jacket for a casual wedding?
No, but it is the quickest way to look put together. Bring one for a church ceremony and take it off at the reception.
Can men wear shorts to a casual wedding?
Rarely. Wear shorts only when the couple says so, which is uncommon even at beach weddings.
What is the difference between casual and dressy casual for men?
At dressy casual a blazer or sport coat is close to expected. At casual it is optional. Both skip the full suit and tie. The full ladder is in the men's wedding guest outfit guide.
