Formal wedding attire for men means a dark suit and a necktie. I default to charcoal with a white shirt and a black or navy silk tie when the card just says formal. Navy covers afternoon better. Skip the tuxedo unless the couple wrote black tie. Skip the jeans.
The invitation says formal and then stops. That usually means a matching suit with a necktie, not a tuxedo and not a blazer over chinos. For the full map of every dress code, start with the men's wedding guest outfit guide. This page stays on formal only: what the floor is, which outfits work by season and venue, and the mistakes that show up in photos.

A charcoal suit and black tie is the safest answer when the card just says formal.
What formal means for men
Formal for male wedding guests is a matching suit, a dress shirt, a necktie and leather dress shoes. Navy and charcoal are the safest colors. Black works for evening. The shirt should be white or light blue. A tuxedo is allowed but not expected; that belongs to black tie.
The floor is a matching suit and a tie. Separates sit below it. A tuxedo sits above it and can look like you misread the card if nobody else is in black tie. When the invitation is vague and the ceremony is after 5 p.m., I treat it as formal.
I'd start with charcoal or navy. Mid-grey works for daytime. Once you know the venue, a deep forest green or brown three-piece can look intentional. Skip an all-white or ivory suit that could compete with the couple.
The default outfit that almost always works
If you only want one answer, build this stack:
- Charcoal or navy two-piece suit
- White dress shirt (light blue for afternoon)
- Black, navy or charcoal silk tie
- Black or dark brown leather oxfords, belt matched to the shoes
- White pocket square

Navy, white shirt, burgundy tie, brown shoes. Clean for most formal afternoon weddings.
Wear the jacket and the tie through the ceremony. Keep the jacket on for formal portraits. You can loosen the tie at the reception once people start dancing.
Afternoon church or hotel
Daytime formal still means a suit and a tie. Mid-grey or navy photographs softer in daylight than black. A light blue shirt with a navy tie works. Brown or dark brown oxfords fit better than jet-black shoes when the ceremony is before evening.

Mid-grey and a navy tie for an afternoon church or hotel.
Heat changes fabric, not the rule. An unlined jacket still has to match the trousers. Linen is risky at formal; a tropical wool keeps the shape without looking casual.
Evening ballroom or after 6 p.m.
After about 6 p.m., or anytime you're in a hotel ballroom, lean darker. Charcoal or black with a white shirt. Expect a black or charcoal silk tie. Black oxfords, polished. A three-piece charcoal suit with a camel overcoat reads intentional without climbing into black-tie territory.

Charcoal, black tie and a coat for a cold evening reception.
If the groomsmen are all in navy, switch your suit color or your tie so you don't look like a spare. That problem is the whole plot of how I picked a blazer for a winter wedding.
The small pieces: shoes, ties and coats
Oxfords in black or dark brown are the standard shoes. Derbies work. Leave sneakers and open sandals at home.
A necktie is required for formal. Solid silk or a quiet pattern is enough. Novelty prints wait for the after-party unless the couple asked for them. A bow tie usually signals black tie, so I save it unless the invitation says so.
A white pocket square is safest. Match the belt to the shoe leather. A simple dress watch beats a sport chronograph for the ceremony. In cold months, bring an overcoat you won't mind being photographed in â camel, navy or charcoal wool.
What not to wear
Leave jeans at home. Chinos as your only trousers fail here too. A tuxedo belongs to black tie unless the couple invited it. An all-white look that reads like the couple's colors is a no. Matching the groomsmen's exact suit and tie combo makes you look like a spare. An open collar without a tie fails at formal. Brand-new shoes you haven't walked in will hurt by the first dance.
Try the suit color on your photo first
Buying a new suit, or choosing between navy and charcoal online, is easier when you can see the color on your own photo. On TryAnyOutfit, add a photo of yourself and a photo or screenshot of the suit. The preview goes on your real photo, not an avatar.
Chips such as Top only and Jacket worn open help when you only want to test the jacket. The page notes the photo stays on your device until you create. It shows how a look appears on you. It won't tell you your size or how the fabric fits, so check the shop's measurements before you buy.
