Semi-Formal Wedding Attire for Men: What to Wear cover with a navy suit, light blue shirt, burgundy tie and brown oxfords on oak wood
In this article

Semi-formal wedding attire for men means a matching suit, with a tie optional. My default when the card is vague is navy. Charcoal is the backup. Lighter greys and linen suit daytime gardens; charcoal and a knit tie suit evening. Skip the tuxedo. Skip the jeans.

The invitation says semi-formal and then stops. That usually means the couple wants you in a suit, not a tuxedo and not a blazer over jeans. For the full map of every dress code, start with the men's wedding guest outfit guide. This page stays on semi-formal only: what the floor is, which outfits work by season and venue, and the mistakes that show up in photos.

Semi-Formal Wedding Attire for Men: What to Wear cover with a navy suit, light blue shirt, burgundy tie and brown oxfords on oak wood

A navy suit is the default answer when the card just says semi-formal.

What semi-formal means for men

Semi-formal and cocktail land in the same place for men. Wear a matching two-piece suit. Pair it with a white or light blue dress shirt and leather dress shoes. A tie is optional, and most guests still wear one to the ceremony.

The floor is a suit. Blazer and jeans sit below it. A tuxedo sits above it and looks like you misread the card. Separates (a blazer with odd trousers) can pass at a daytime outdoor wedding when the trousers are dressy wool, not chinos. For evening or a church, stick to a matching suit.

Safe colors start with navy or charcoal; mid-grey works too. Once you know the venue, forest green or brown also looks right. In warm weather, light blue or a stone linen-blend can work. Skip an all-white or ivory suit that could compete with the couple.

The default outfit that almost always works

If you only want one answer, build this stack:

  • Navy two-piece suit
  • White or light blue dress shirt
  • Burgundy, navy or charcoal silk tie (bring one even if you skip it later)
  • Dark brown or black leather oxfords or derbies, belt matched to the shoes
  • White pocket square

Navy, white shirt, burgundy tie, brown shoes. Hard to get wrong.

Wear the jacket through the ceremony. Take it off at the reception once people start dancing. That sequence photographs cleanly and keeps you from looking underdressed next to the wedding party.

Daytime garden, vineyard or outdoor

Daytime outdoor weddings soften the dress code without dropping below a suit. Mid-grey or light grey, stone or tan linen-blend suits work with a pale blue shirt. A knit tie or open collar fits if the ceremony feels relaxed. Brown or tan loafers, including suede, finish the look.

Heat changes fabric, not the rule. An unlined or half-lined jacket still has to match the trousers. Sandals and canvas sneakers stay out unless the couple wrote them in.

Evening, church or hotel ballroom

After about 6 p.m., or anytime you're indoors in a church or hotel ballroom, lean darker. Charcoal or navy with a white shirt. Expect to wear a tie. Black or dark brown oxfords, polished. A three-piece charcoal suit with a green or burgundy knit tie reads intentional without climbing into black-tie territory.

If the groomsmen are all in navy, switch your suit color or your tie so you don't look like a spare. That problem is the whole plot of how I picked a blazer for a winter wedding.

The small pieces: shoes and ties

Oxfords and derbies in black or dark brown are the standard shoes. Leather loafers work for daytime outdoor. Skip sneakers and open sandals.

A tie is optional on the invitation and useful in photos. Solid silk or a quiet pattern is enough. Novelty prints wait for the after-party unless the couple asked for them.

A white pocket square is safest. If you skip the tie, the pocket square does a lot of the polish. Match the belt to the shoe leather, or wear suspenders under the jacket and skip the belt. A simple dress watch beats a sport chronograph for the ceremony.

What not to wear

Leave jeans at home, along with cargo pants or athletic sneakers. A tuxedo belongs to black tie, a different code. An all-white or ivory look that reads like the couple's colors is a no. Matching the groomsmen's exact suit and tie combo makes you look like a spare. A wrinkled linen shirt with no jacket fails at an evening indoor wedding. Brand-new shoes you haven't walked in will hurt by the first dance.

Try the suit color on your photo first

Buying a new suit, or choosing between navy and charcoal online, is easier when you can see the color on your own photo. On TryAnyOutfit, add a photo of yourself and a photo or screenshot of the suit. The preview goes on your real photo, not an avatar.

Chips such as Top only and Jacket worn open help when you only want to test the jacket. The page notes the photo stays on your device until you create. It shows how a look appears on you. It won't tell you your size or how the fabric fits, so check the shop's measurements before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

Is semi-formal the same as cocktail for men?

Nearly. Both call for a suit. The tie is optional. Women's dress lengths differ more than men's clothing does between the two labels.

Do I have to wear a tie to a semi-formal wedding?

No, but bring one. Wear it to the ceremony, then decide at the reception. Open collar looks intentional only when the shirt and suit fit cleanly.

Can I wear a blazer instead of a suit to a semi-formal wedding?

At a daytime outdoor wedding, a sharp blazer with dress trousers can pass. For evening, church or a hotel ballroom, wear a matching suit.

Is a black suit okay for semi-formal?

Yes for evening. Navy or charcoal usually photographs softer in daylight.

Where does semi-formal sit next to other wedding dress codes?

Below black tie and formal, above dressy casual. The full ladder is in the men's wedding guest outfit guide.
