The safest work holiday party outfit is one step dressier than what you wear to the office, plus one festive piece. Think a velvet blazer over black trousers, a satin midi skirt with a fine knit, or a dark suit with a turtleneck where the tie would be. Your coworkers will see you on Monday. Dress for that.
I'd rather overshoot slightly than show up in my Tuesday clothes. But a festive invite is not a license for the sequin dress you'd wear to a New Year's club night. The invitation, the time of day and the venue tell you most of what you need, so start there.

Velvet and satin, toned down with a knit. Your manager will see this one.
TL;DR
- Daytime party in the office: your usual work outfit plus one festive piece, like a velvet blazer or a metallic top.
- Evening party at a restaurant or venue: cocktail level. A dress, dressy separates, or a suit with the tie optional.
- "Festive" on the invite: cocktail attire with holiday color or texture.
- Ugly sweater party: the sweater goes over clothes you'd wear to work anyway.
- Skip anything you'd wear to a club, anything see-through, and shoes you can't stand in for three hours.
Read the invitation first
The wording on the email or calendar invite does most of the work. Here's how I'd translate the usual phrases:
| What the invite says | What to wear |
|---|---|
| Nothing, or "join us after work" | Your office outfit plus one festive piece |
| Business casual | Trousers or a skirt with a nice top or a sport coat, no tie needed |
| Festive | Cocktail attire with holiday color, velvet, satin or a bit of shine |
| Cocktail | A dress or dressy separates; for men, a suit with the tie optional |
| Ugly sweater | A themed sweater over work-appropriate trousers or jeans |
| Black tie | Gown or tuxedo, exactly as the invite says |
Festive is the one that confuses people. The Emily Post Institute describes festive attire as cocktail party attire with a seasonal, holiday touch. For men, its list starts with a seasonal sport coat or blazer in the color of your choice over slacks. The shirt can be open-collar or a dress shirt, and the tie, if any, can be festive.
For the men's cocktail version in more detail, see cocktail attire for men. It's written for weddings, but the suit rules carry over.
Time and place matter as much as the wording. A lunch in the office kitchen at 1 p.m. calls for your normal work clothes with one festive swap. An evening at a hotel or a restaurant moves you up to cocktail level, and Emily Post's general rule is to err on the side of formality after 6 p.m. If you can't tell, ask someone who went last year. One Slack message saves a lot of guessing.
Some teams party over video instead. Challenger, Gray & Christmas surveyed 173 HR and business leaders for its 2024 holiday party report: 64% of companies planned a holiday celebration, and 4.5% reported virtual events. On a screen only the top half counts, so the velvet blazer or jewel-tone sweater does the job. Earrings and a pocket square show up better than shoes.
8 work holiday party outfit ideas
1. Velvet blazer with black trousers
This is the one I'd recommend to almost anyone. An emerald, burgundy or navy velvet blazer over a black fine-knit top and black wide-leg trousers. Loafers or ankle boots. It reads festive from across the room and still looks like work clothes up close.

Emerald velvet over black. The blazer does all the festive work.
2. Satin midi skirt with a fine knit
A satin midi skirt in burgundy, emerald or champagne with a cream or black sweater on top. The knit keeps the satin from looking like an evening gown. Ankle boots and sheer tights carry it through a cold walk to the venue.

Satin skirt, chunky knit. Comfortable through a long dinner.
Choosing between two skirts like this is exactly what happened in how I picked my holiday party outfit, where a team dinner at a wine bar said "dress festive" and nothing else.
3. Dark suit with a turtleneck
For men, a charcoal or navy suit with a black or cream merino turtleneck instead of a shirt and tie. It's dressier than business casual and less stiff than a tie. A patterned pocket square or chelsea boots in brown suede add the holiday part.

Charcoal suit, black turtleneck, tartan pocket square. No tie required.
Five more ideas that work
No suit? A sport coat in burgundy, bottle green or brown tweed with grey trousers matches Emily Post's festive list almost line for line. Wear an open-collar shirt under it, and add a festive tie only if you'd actually enjoy wearing it.
A knit midi dress in emerald, plum or deep red with knee boots is the easiest pick for a daytime party in the office. It looks planned without looking like you changed in the bathroom.
One sequin or metallic top under a black blazer, with black trousers or a black skirt, is plenty of shine. Head-to-toe sequins at a work party are a lot unless the invite asks for glam.
Black or cream wide-leg trousers with a silk blouse in a holiday color suit a restaurant dinner where you'll be seated most of the night. Pick heels you can stand in, or flats.
And if it's an ugly sweater party, wear the sweater over the trousers or dark jeans you'd wear to work, not over gym clothes. The sweater is the joke. The rest of the outfit isn't. For choosing between two terrible sweaters, see how I picked my ugly sweater party outfit.
What not to wear to a work holiday party
You're still at work, even with a drink in your hand. I'd skip:
- Anything sheer, very short or very low-cut. You'll be in photos that end up on the company Slack.
- Club outfits, like a bodycon sequin mini or a shiny going-out shirt with the top buttons open.
- Novelty headwear beyond one pair of antlers, unless it's the theme.
- Brand-new heels. You'll be standing for most of the night.
- Gym clothes or a hoodie, even at a casual office lunch.
Also check your employer's own dress code before you go. The Emily Post Institute says the same about business attire, and a party at the office is still covered by it.
Try the outfit on your photo first
Party clothes are the ones you wear once a year, which makes them the easiest to regret. On TryAnyOutfit, add a photo of yourself and a photo or screenshot of the outfit, and the preview goes on your real photo, not an avatar. The Bottom only chip swaps just the skirt or trousers, so you can keep the top you already own.

Outfit uploaded, Bottom only selected. Add your photo next, then generate in Studio. Screenshot taken November 8, 2026.
It shows how a look reads on you. It won't pick your size or tell you how satin moves, so check the shop's measurements and return window. It runs on phones (iPhone and Android) and in the web Studio, with credits shared. It's cheap to start; current options are on the pricing page. Uploaded photos are auto-deleted after 72 hours unless you save them.
If the office party is one of several events this month, the events try-on guide covers weddings and dinners too.
