Short answer: for a random outfit from clothes you already own, use a closet app with a shuffle button, like Stylebook or Whering's Dress Me. For a quick idea or a character description, free web generators such as YouLookFab make one in a click. And if you want to see a look on your own photo, Adobe Firefly generates a surprise one, while TryAnyOutfit lets you pick from a feed and try it on.

Some mornings the problem isn't a lack of clothes. It's ten decent options and no will to choose. A random outfit generator takes the choice away for a minute, and that's often all you need.

The catch is that "random outfit generator" means three different tools. One kind shuffles your real closet. Another spits out a description or a set of shop items. The third paints a new look onto a photo of you. We make TryAnyOutfit, which sits in that last group, so read our section with that in mind.

Shuffle the cards, wear what comes up. That's the whole idea.

Three kinds of random outfit generator: closet shufflers like Stylebook, Whering and GetWardrobe; list pickers like YouLookFab, Perchance and Springhole; and photo tools like Adobe Firefly and TryAnyOutfit

Decide which kind you need before you download anything.

Shuffle your own closet

This is the kind people on r/capsulewardrobe ask about. You photograph or import your clothes once. After that, a button deals out combinations, and anything it suggests is already hanging in your wardrobe.

Stylebook

Stylebook's listing calls its feature an outfit generator that shuffles your closet "like a deck of cards". It's a paid app at $4.99 on the US App Store, with no subscription listed, and it holds a 4.7 rating from about 8,900 reviews. The same app also plans outfits on a calendar and builds packing lists. The shuffle is one tool among many.

Two things to know. Its site describes it as an iPhone and iPad app, so Android users are out. And the last App Store update we saw was June 15, 2025, which is a while ago for an app you'll spend an evening setting up.

Whering: Dress Me

Whering is free and its shuffle has a name: Dress Me, which the company describes as Clueless-inspired. You can skip most of the photo work, because Whering lets you pull items from a database of over 100 million products or straight from retailer sites. It runs on iPhone and Android. Paid extras are credit packs (10 for $2.99 up to 100 for $12.99) and a $4.99 Outfit Maker. If a closet comparison is what you're after, our Indyx vs Whering piece goes deeper.

GetWardrobe

GetWardrobe is less of a coin flip and more of a filtered draw. Its AI Outfit Generator deals 10 outfits per run from your own clothes, and you can filter a run by the weather or the occasion. Free accounts get unlimited runs. If you'd rather swipe, an Explore Combinations screen shows pairings one at a time. The free closet caps at 100 items; Premium starts at $4.99 a month. You'll find it on both phone platforms, plus a web version.

Prefer a closet app that is the opposite of random? Indyx says so in its own listing: "No random outfits styled by robots or complete chance." It leans on human stylists instead. For more closet apps, see best wardrobe apps and apps like Clueless Closet.

Clothing pieces laid out like shuffled cards on linen with two dice in the middle and a striped shirt, jeans and loafers pulled out as the chosen outfit

You can do the same with real dice: number six tops and six bottoms, roll two, get dressed.

Quick web generators, no closet needed

No sign-up and nothing to photograph. You click a button and get a result. They're best for a spark of an idea, or for writers and artists who need an outfit for a character.

YouLookFab's generator fills five slots per click, from a topper down to shoes and a bag, with real products that members of the site have saved. Pick the women's or the men's department. Members can heart an item to keep it. Its founder, Angie Cox, started the site after 15 years in the fashion industry and now works as a stylist.

Perchance is a site where people build their own random generators, and fashionator is one of them. It writes words, not pictures. A top, for example, gets a color and a fabric like corduroy or chambray, plus where the hem falls and what kind of collar it has. Handy if you're drawing.

Springhole's generator belongs to a collection built for writing and role-playing. Click once for a completely random outfit, click again for another. The site also has separate generators for gowns and suits.

None of these know your size, body or closet, so treat the results as prompts.

See a random look on your own photo

Adobe has a Firefly page for exactly this search. Upload a clear photo of yourself and either describe a style or leave the prompt open-ended "for a more random result". Firefly returns several variations. A free Adobe account includes free daily generations, and paid plans add more. It accepts JPG, PNG or WebP photos of at least 512 × 512 pixels, in a browser on a phone or a computer. Firefly invents the clothes, so there may be nothing to buy that matches.

TryAnyOutfit isn't a randomizer. We make it, and we won't pretend otherwise. What it has is Discover, a feed of outfit ideas that even covers kids and pets. Scroll until something catches your eye. Tap it, and you'll see that look on a photo of you. Screenshots from a store or a social post work too, in the app or in the web studio. Each try-on uses one credit: packs are 5 for $2.99, 15 for $4.99 or 30 for $8.99, and plans are 20 try-ons for $7.99 a week or 50 for $14.99 a month. Photo setup and our quizzes are free.

A preview shows the look. It doesn't measure fit or choose a size, so check the retailer's size chart before you order.

TryAnyOutfit Discover feed on iPhone with outfit ideas, each ready to try on your own photo

Discover in the TryAnyOutfit app: browse, pick one, try it on.

Still stuck? Narrow it down first

Randomness works better with a smaller deck. If every result feels wrong, the generator isn't the problem. Your closet probably holds pieces you don't like wearing.

Take our free style quiz or the wardrobe quiz for a direction, and read what a style quiz can and can't tell you. Then shuffle only the pieces that fit that direction. To build looks on purpose instead, try outfit maker apps or an AI outfit generator that works from a prompt.

Which random outfit generator should you use?

To wear what you own, pick Stylebook if you're on iPhone and happy to pay once. Whering is the free choice on any phone. GetWardrobe suits you if the weather should narrow the draw.

For an idea in five seconds, YouLookFab gives you real shop items, and Springhole or Perchance gives you a written description.

To see it on you, Adobe Firefly makes up a surprise look. TryAnyOutfit shows a look you chose yourself, from the feed or a screenshot.
