Short answer: if your closet is full and you still have nothing to wear, use an app that builds outfits from what you own. Alta Daily is free and suggests a look for the weather and your day. If you're out of ideas altogether, browse other people's outfits on Combyne or Pinterest. And once you've found a look, TryAnyOutfit shows it on your own photo before you change.

"Nothing to wear" rarely means an empty closet. Usually you can't see new combinations in clothes you already own. Sometimes you're just bored. Now and then you've found an idea and can't tell if it would suit you. Each problem has its own kind of app, and we'd match the app to the problem.

We make TryAnyOutfit, one of the apps below. We've kept it to the section where it fits.

Outfit ideas apps grouped by problem: Alta Daily, Acloset, Fits and Whering for combining clothes you own, Combyne and Pinterest for new ideas, TryAnyOutfit to see an idea on your photo

Pick the app by the kind of stuck you are.

Alta Daily: free ideas from your own closet

Most mornings the problem isn't a lack of clothes. You keep reaching for the same three outfits. The first four apps here work from photos of what you already own. Expect some setup: the ideas get better as the closet fills up.

Alta suggests a daily outfit from your closet based on the weather and your schedule. Want to wear that new jacket? Ask, and it builds outfits around it, or around an event like a work conference. Adding clothes is quicker than most, because you can forward email receipts or pick items from Alta's database instead of photographing everything. It can show the outfit on an avatar that looks like you, and there's a web app at altadaily.com.

The site says Alta is free to use, and its App Store listing shows no in-app purchases. On iPhone it has 4.9 stars from about 17,000 ratings. If you want ideas without paying, it's our pick.

Acloset: daily picks plus a chat stylist

Acloset does the daily outfit too, matched to the weather and your plans, and adds a chat stylist you can ask anything from "what should I wear today?" to "does this match?" There's a personal color analysis too. Everything is free up to 100 items. Past that, plans run from Basic at $3.99 a month or $27.99 a year up to Expert at $24.99 a month. It's rated 4.5 on both iPhone and Google Play, where it has more than 5M downloads.

Fits: swipe your clothes into outfits

Fits is for people who'd rather build the outfit themselves. You swipe through your clothes until a combination clicks, or drop pieces on a canvas. An AI stylist suggests outfits from your closet, and a calendar lets you look back at what you wore. Its App Store page ranked second on Google for "outfit ideas app" when we checked.

The app is free with unlimited items and background removal. Fits Pro adds unlimited AI outfit suggestions, and the App Store lists it at $9.99, $29.99 and $59.99 (the listing doesn't name the billing periods). It's rated 4.6 on iPhone and 4.7 on Google Play.

Whering: shuffle your closet

Whering's Dress Me button, which it calls "Clueless-inspired", shuffles your clothes into random outfits. It's the fastest way to break a rut if you don't want to think. You can add items from a database Whering puts at over 100 million pieces, and you can browse friends' closets for ideas. The Outfit Maker comes with a Style Pass, and the App Store lists an Outfit Maker purchase at $4.99. Ratings: 4.7 on iPhone from about 12,000, and 4.4 on Google Play.

Three outfit ideas laid out on a bed: navy sweater with cream trousers and loafers, rust dress with denim jacket and sneakers, grey hoodie with black jeans and boots

Three outfits from one ordinary closet: knit and trousers, a dress with denim, a hoodie with black jeans.

Combyne: outfits from a community

Sometimes your clothes are fine and you just want to see something new. For that you need other people's outfits.

Combyne is a feed of outfits that its users put together from shop items, more than 800 brands and shops according to the listing. You can follow people whose style you like, join the daily outfit challenges and save looks for later. It's free to browse and make outfits. Premium is listed at $2.99 and $19.99. It's rated 4.8 from about 88,000 ratings on iPhone, with more than 10M downloads on Google Play.

The catch is that the ideas are built from things to buy, not from your closet. Use it for inspiration, then look for something similar in what you own.

Pinterest: the inspiration board

The old standby. Search "fall work outfits" or "what to wear to a wedding", save what you like to a board, and you have a mood board in minutes. It's free and rated 4.8 from about 5.8M ratings on iPhone. But it knows nothing about your closet. The outfits are on other people.

TryAnyOutfit: try the idea on your photo

This is our app, and it covers the last step: you've found an idea and want to see it on you. Our Discover feed has outfit ideas for every member of the family, pets included. Pick a look, or upload any outfit image or store screenshot, and you get a preview of it on your own photo. Saved looks go into a digital wardrobe with an outfit calendar. Tell the AI stylist where you're going and it suggests outfits from the clothes in your wardrobe.

Browse a look, then try it on your own photo.

It's on iPhone and Android, with a web studio as well. There's no free render. Each try-on uses one credit, sold in one-time packs or a subscription; see current plans. If you're still working out your style, start with our free Style quiz or Wardrobe quiz.

A preview shows the look. It doesn't measure fit or choose a size, so check the retailer's size chart before you buy anything new.

Which outfit ideas app should you use?

Start with Alta Daily if you want free daily ideas from clothes you own. Choose Acloset if you'd like to chat with a stylist and your closet is under 100 items, or Fits if you enjoy putting outfits together by hand. Whering's Dress Me is the quickest cure for a rut. For fresh ideas, browse Combyne or Pinterest. And when you've found a look and want to know if it suits you, try it on your photo in TryAnyOutfit.

To make outfits by hand, see our outfit maker apps. For a quick shuffle there are random outfit generators. If you plan the week ahead, look at outfit planner apps, and for more chat stylists, AI stylist apps.
