Whering vs Stylebook: Which Closet App Is Easier to Keep Up?

Whering is easier to keep up if you don't want to photograph every item: it adds clothes from a product database or store pages and is free on iPhone and Android. Stylebook suits a private closet on iPhone or iPad for $4.99 once, but its last App Store update was June 2025.

Short answer: Whering is easier to keep up if you'd rather not photograph every item, because you can pull clothes from its product database or a store page, and it's free on iPhone and Android. Stylebook suits people who want a private, offline-style closet on iPhone or iPad and are happy to pay $4.99 once. Its last App Store update was in June 2025, though, while Whering shipped one in October 2026.

Why do people quit closet apps? Rarely for missing features. Usually it's around item 40, when photographing clothes stops being fun. So our test here is which app you'd still be updating in March.

We make TryAnyOutfit, a try-on app, and we don't make a closet app that competes with either. We've compared both with Indyx before, in Indyx vs Whering and Indyx vs Stylebook. This is the head-to-head.

Whering vs Stylebook at a glance: free with in-app purchases vs $4.99 once, iPhone, Android and Mac vs iPhone and iPad, database and store imports vs your photos, last updated October 2026 vs June 2025

The split comes down to effort and platform.

Adding your clothes: where the hours go

Whering's App Store listing says its database holds over 100 million items. If you own something from a big retailer, you can search for it instead of photographing it, or add it from the store's website, including through a Chrome extension. For the rest, you take a photo and Whering removes the background. That covers the boring part of building a closet faster than shooting 120 hangers one by one.

Stylebook leans on your own photos, but it has tools to cut the work down. Its FAQ describes a multiple import that cuts out a large batch of photos at once and files them in bulk. You can also add items without a photo or clip them from store websites. On devices with Apple Intelligence it can even generate an item image from a text description. The tradeoff is control. Stylebook's free-form canvas lets you arrange an outfit exactly the way you want, which people who like collages tend to love and everyone else finds slow.

Photographing pieces one by one is where most closet apps get abandoned.

Getting dressed: shuffles and planners

Whering's "Dress Me" shuffles your closet into outfits, and the listing calls it Clueless-inspired. The October 2026 update made the planner suggest outfits from your wardrobe based on the weather, and you can change the location to plan for a trip. Packing lists and an event planner sit alongside it. Whering also sells a Style Pass for its Outfit Maker, so not every styling tool is free.

Stylebook's outfit generator shuffles your items "like a deck of cards", and its calendar records what you wore and when. Packing lists are there too. It doesn't suggest outfits from the weather, at least not according to its listing. If you want an app to propose looks, Whering is ahead. If you build outfits yourself and just need a place to keep them, Stylebook does that job well. For more apps in this lane, see our outfit planner apps roundup.

Paying: free with extras vs one price

Stylebook costs $4.99 in the US, once. Its FAQ says plainly that it isn't a subscription, and Family Sharing covers up to six people.

Whering is free to download. The App Store lists in-app purchases from $0.99 to $49.99, among them credit packs and the Outfit Maker. Its Terms also describe W-Chat, an AI styling assistant run on a third-party AI provider, and say the platform "may offer" a photo-based virtual try-on. Neither feature is named on the App Store listing we checked, so we wouldn't pick Whering for them.

Privacy and platforms

This is where Stylebook makes its case. Its App Store privacy label lists only analytics data, not linked to you, and its FAQ says your closet is stored on your device and in iCloud. Whering is a social app, and its label includes identifiers used to track you. If you'd rather your wardrobe never touch a social feed, that settles it.

Platform settles it for others. Stylebook runs on iPhone and iPad only. Asked about Android, its FAQ answers "Not at the moment" and says the team is focusing on iOS. Whering runs on iPhone, Android (rated 4.39 from 27,902 reviews on Google Play) and Apple-silicon Macs. If you might switch to Android, our Stylebook alternatives post covers the options.

One more thing to weigh. Stylebook's FAQ says the app is "actively adding new features", yet version 10.1 from June 15, 2025 is still the current one. That's a small family company, not an abandoned app, but we'd expect slower changes.

What neither app shows you

Both apps show clothes as flat cutouts. Neither puts an outfit on a photo of you. That's the gap TryAnyOutfit fills: upload a photo of yourself and any clothing image, and see the outfit on you before you buy or plan it. You can keep the closet in Whering or Stylebook and use our web try-on when you want to see a combination worn. A preview shows the look. It doesn't measure fit or choose a size, so check the size chart before you order. Credits are paid; see pricing.

Which one should you pick?

Pick Whering if you use Android, want to add clothes from a database instead of photographing them, or like seeing friends' closets. Pick Stylebook if you're on iPhone or iPad, want one payment and a private closet, and enjoy arranging outfits by hand. Still deciding on the kind of app? Our virtual closet apps guide compares how each type shows an outfit, and apps like Whering lists more free options. You can also take our free style quiz before you start cataloging.
