# Virtual Closet Apps That Show Clothes on You, Not Just in a Grid

Most virtual closet apps still show clothes as cutouts in a grid. Acloset and Alta Daily put outfits on an AI avatar made from your photo, Indyx and TryAnyOutfit use a real photo of you, Pureple uses a model, and Whering and Stylebook stay with grids and collages.

Short answer: most virtual closet apps still show your clothes as cutouts in a grid. Want to see the outfit on a body? Acloset and Alta Daily use an AI avatar made from your photo; Indyx and TryAnyOutfit use a real photo of you.

A grid of cutouts is great for knowing what you own. At 7am it's less help. By then the question is how the rust cardigan looks with the wide jeans on you, and in our view that's what most closet apps still skip. So we sorted them by how they show an outfit.

We make TryAnyOutfit, one of the apps below. It only appears in the section where it fits.

*A closet app can stop at the hanger or go one step further and show the look on a body.*

*Four ways a closet app can show an outfit, from a flat grid to your own photo.*

## Avatar, real photo or model?

In an app store screenshot these look alike. In use they don't. An avatar is a generated figure built from your photo: set it up once, and every outfit lands on the same digital you. With a real-photo preview, the app edits a picture of you, so the background is your own room. Model previews put the clothes on someone else's body. That tells you more about the combination than about you.

None of them measures you. Pureple says it plainly on its listing: results are for style visualization, not a sizing tool. We'd say the same of every app here, ours included.

## Acloset: an avatar for the clothes you've cataloged

Acloset builds a virtual avatar from a single full-body photo. You can dress it in clothes from your closet, wishlist items or the app's recommended outfits, then save the result to an outfit or a daily look. A recent update added a Basic tier for Try On with free uses that refill every day, and the company says the number of uses depends on current account policies. It also says results now keep your face and body shape closer to how you look.

Its closet toolkit is the fullest here, down to importing items from shopping receipts. Free covers up to 100 items with all features. Plans start at $3.99 a month or $27.99 a year, and the App Store also sells beans from 100 for $1.99. The Google Play listing says it contains ads. Ratings are 4.5 on both stores.

## Alta Daily: an avatar, and free

Alta Daily generates the outfit "on an avatar that looks like you". Its stylist suggests outfits from your own closet for the weather and your calendar, and you can plan trips with packing lists. Alta says it is free to use, and the App Store page lists no in-app purchases. There's also a web app at altadaily.com. One App Store reviewer wrote that it "takes a few tries" for the avatar to look flattering, which matches what we'd expect from any generated figure. It holds 4.9 stars from about 17,200 ratings on iPhone and 4.5 on Google Play.

*Six pieces in a grid tell you what you own. Three of them on a body tell you whether they work together.*

## Indyx: Virtual Selfies on your own photo

Indyx added Virtual Selfies, which "let you preview any look on a real photo of you". They show up on the outfit calendar, and if selfies aren't your thing, a later update made the board view easier to get back to. Beyond that, Indyx is a strong free closet with unlimited items and outfits plus cost-per-wear. Its listing doesn't say whether Virtual Selfies sit behind the paid Insider membership ($12.99 a month or $74.99 a year), so check in the app. It's rated 4.8 on iPhone and 4.5 on Google Play. Our [Indyx vs Stylebook](/blog/indyx-vs-stylebook) post covers the closet side in depth.

## GetWardrobe and Fits: try-on inside a bigger closet app

GetWardrobe's listing promises you can "see how outfits look on you before getting dressed". There's a try-on history, and the outfit editor now has virtual avatars. AI features run on pay-as-you-go credits, starting at 20 for $4.99. It's the only app here with a Mac app and a web app as well as phones, and the free tier holds 100 items.

Fits describes "realistic outfit previews with the virtual try-on tool", and any outfit can switch between its collage view and an AI try-on. The listing doesn't say whether that try-on uses your photo or a model. Items are unlimited on the free side, and AI credits start at 5 for $1.99. We have a [TryAnyOutfit vs Fits](/compare/tryanyoutfit-vs-fits) page if you're weighing the two.

## Pureple: a model, or you

On the App Store, Pureple's try-on puts an outfit set or collage "on a model using AI". Its site says you can explore an outfit on yourself or on a virtual model. Manual outfits and unlimited items are free. For AI styling you pay, with Premium at $89.99 a year after a 7-day trial. Ratings are the weak spot. It has 3.9 on iPhone and 2.5 on Google Play, where it also shows ads.

## TryAnyOutfit: any outfit on your photo

Ours starts from the other end. Instead of the clothes you've already cataloged, you bring any outfit image or a screenshot from a store, and it goes onto your own photo. Saved looks land in My Wardrobe with an outfit calendar, and the AI stylist suggests outfits from them.

![TryAnyOutfit studio on iPhone putting an outfit image onto a person photo to make a try-on preview](https://storage.googleapis.com/tryanyoutfit.firebasestorage.app/blog-images/tryanyoutfit-studio-outfit-on-your-own-photo-71939028.webp)

*TryAnyOutfit puts an outfit screenshot on your own photo.*

It runs on iPhone and Android, plus a [web studio](/tryon). Photo setup and the [style quiz](/quiz) are free. Rendering uses paid credits, one per try-on; current packs and plans are on the [pricing](/#pricing) section. It won't catalog a 300-piece closet the way Acloset or Indyx will, so many people pair it with one of them.

A preview shows the look. It doesn't measure fit or choose a size, so check the retailer's size chart before you buy.

## Grid only: Whering and Stylebook

Some people don't want a body in the picture at all. Whering is free with no item limit and has a big community; its listing doesn't describe a try-on. Stylebook costs $4.99 once on iPhone and gives you a free-form canvas, cost-per-wear and packing lists. Both are covered in our [apps like Whering](/blog/apps-like-whering) and [Stylebook alternatives](/blog/stylebook-alternatives) posts.

## Which virtual closet app should you pick?

For an avatar on a budget, start with Alta Daily. Acloset is the pick if you'll use the whole toolkit and either stay under 100 items or pay. For a real photo of you in the outfit, try Indyx's Virtual Selfies with your own closet, or TryAnyOutfit for things you haven't bought yet. Going deeper on try-on, see our [virtual try-on apps](/blog/best-virtual-try-on-apps) and [virtual fitting room apps](/blog/virtual-fitting-room-apps) lists. ## Frequently asked questions

### Is there a virtual closet app that shows clothes on you?

Yes. Acloset and Alta Daily put outfits on an AI avatar made from your photo. Indyx's Virtual Selfies and TryAnyOutfit put a look on a real photo of you. GetWardrobe's listing also describes a virtual try-on that shows outfits on you.

### What is the best free virtual closet app with an avatar?

Alta Daily. Its site says it is free to use, its App Store page lists no in-app purchases, and it generates outfits on an avatar that looks like you.

### What's the difference between an avatar and a real-photo try-on?

An avatar is a generated figure built once from your photo, and every outfit is shown on it. A real-photo try-on edits a picture of you, so your own photo and background stay in the result.

### Does a virtual closet try-on tell me if clothes fit?

No. These previews show how a look comes together. Pureple's listing says its results are for style visualization and not a sizing tool, and the same goes for TryAnyOutfit. Check the retailer's size chart.

### Is Acloset's try-on free?

Acloset says Try On has a Basic tier with free uses that refill every day, and that the number of uses depends on current account policies. The closet itself is free for up to 100 items.
