# Maybelline Brings Real-Time Makeup Try-On to ChatGPT

Maybelline New York launched a Makeup Virtual Try-On app inside ChatGPT on 29 October 2026, built with L'Oréal's ModiFace technology. **News, 2 November 2026.** Maybelline New York has put makeup try-on inside ChatGPT. The L'Oréal brand announced the app on 29 October and says it is "the first beauty brand to bring real-time, virtual try-on directly into the platform." Four weeks earlier, ChatGPT got its own Try on button for clothes. We think this is the bigger signal of the two: brands now want their own try-on inside the chat, not just a button on a listing.

## What happened

Maybelline announced the Makeup Virtual Try-On experience in ChatGPT in a press release dated 29 October 2026. The release says it combines "Maybelline's deep beauty expertise with L'Oréal's ModiFace technology" and is "available beginning October 29, 2026."

The brand pitches it as a makeup coach that lives in one conversation. You get advice and shade picks, then a link to a store, without leaving the chat.

Maybelline wants to meet shoppers "wherever they're seeking inspiration and advice," Yasmin Dastmalchi, President of Maybelline New York, said in the release.

## How it works

The release lists three steps, and Maybelline's own page adds a few details.

1. **Find it.** The release says to search for "Maybelline" in the ChatGPT Apps section. Maybelline's FAQ words it differently: open the "Plugins" section, connect the Maybelline app, then type @Maybelline in a chat.
2. **Ask.** Describe what you want in your own words, for example the occasion or your undertone.
3. **Try on.** Preview Maybelline products and shades "using your live camera or upload a photo." According to the Maybelline page, the full makeup range is included, from lips to brows, and you can try more than one product in a conversation.
4. **Buy.** A "Where to Buy" step connects you to in-store and online retailers.

Maybelline's page also says the experience is free to explore and needs no app download. Those are Maybelline's terms for its own app in ChatGPT.

On accuracy, Maybelline says the try-on aims to "closely simulate real shades and finishes," and adds that in-person results "may vary slightly by lighting and skin texture." We haven't run the app ourselves yet, so we're quoting the brand here rather than judging the shades.

## Background: L'Oréal and OpenAI

The launch grows out of a deal announced earlier this year. On 17 June 2026, at VivaTech, L'Oréal said it was working with OpenAI and that "Maybelline New York will bring Makeup Virtual Try-On directly to ChatGPT, powered by L'Oréal's ModiFace technology." Maybelline's release says L'Oréal showed it there "as a pilot."

Maybelline's release calls the launch "an important first step" in L'Oréal's plan to bring its beauty services into chat assistants "over time." It doesn't name the next brand or a date.

## Why it matters

Try-on is moving into AI chat, one category at a time. OpenAI added a Try on button for clothes and accessories in ChatGPT shopping in October, which we covered in [ChatGPT virtual try-on](/blog/chatgpt-virtual-try-on). Google has offered clothing try-on in Search since its 2025 Search Labs experiment and US launch, which we compare in [TryAnyOutfit vs Google try-on](/compare/tryanyoutfit-vs-google-try-on). In India, Google is also testing try-on inside [Google Pay's Discover tab](/blog/google-pay-virtual-try-on-india).

What's different here? It's a brand's own app inside ChatGPT, not a ChatGPT feature, so you only see one brand's catalog. If you already wear Maybelline, that's a short path from question to shade. If you're comparing brands, it's one shelf.

It also shows where beauty brands want to meet shoppers. A brand app in a chat assistant is a new kind of storefront, and the release points to more of them over time.

## How TryAnyOutfit fits

TryAnyOutfit doesn't do makeup. It's a clothing try-on app: you add a photo of yourself and a photo or screenshot of an outfit, and it shows the whole look on your own photo. A wedding-guest dress you saw on Instagram works as well as a store listing.

In our view the two don't compete. Use Maybelline's app for the lipstick and TryAnyOutfit for the dress you'd wear with it. A generated image isn't a measurement. Check the size chart and return policy before you buy clothes, whichever app you used. TryAnyOutfit has no free trial, but it's cheap to start. Uploaded photos are auto-deleted after 72 hours unless you save them.
