# How I Tried On a Leopard Skirt Before a Comedy Show

Before a comedy show, I took one full-length photo in a charcoal sweater I already owned and tried a leopard print midi skirt over it with TryAnyOutfit's virtual try-on, using the Bottom only chip. The previews settled whether the print worked; the size chart, a tape measure and the real skirt settled the rest.

Short answer: before a stand-up night, I tried a leopard print midi skirt over one full-length photo of me in a charcoal sweater I already owned, using TryAnyOutfit's [virtual try-on](/tryon) with the Bottom only chip. The preview showed me the print worked with that sweater and didn't look like a costume. Size and hem length were questions for the size chart and a tape measure. So was the way satin creases when you sit.

*A skirt I'd put back in the cart for three weeks, and a sweater I already owned.*

My friend Jess texted on Monday: two tickets for a stand-up show on Saturday, a small club downtown, table near the front. Then a second text. "Wear something fun. Not your black jeans."

She had a point. Most of what I wear out is black jeans and a black top, and I'd been looking at the same leopard print satin midi skirt in an online shop for about three weeks. I kept adding it to my cart and taking it out again. I liked it on the model. I couldn't picture it on me, and I was a little afraid I'd look like I was going to a costume party, three rows from a comedian looking for something to talk about.

*Roughly what I imagined: small tables, a brick wall, one microphone, nowhere to hide.*

## The sweater I already had

I'd read TryAnyOutfit's guide on [what to wear to a comedy show](/blog/what-to-wear-to-a-comedy-show). One of its six outfits is a leopard midi with a charcoal sweater and low boots. I own a charcoal crew-neck. So all I needed to know was whether this skirt worked with that sweater on my body.

The [virtual try-on page](/tryon) has two boxes. **You** takes a photo of yourself, and **Outfit** takes a picture of the clothes: a product image, a shopping screenshot or a photo of something you own. When I opened it, the Outfit box already had one of the site's sample garments in it, a cream ruffle skirt. I replaced it with the shop's photo of the leopard skirt, cropped so the whole skirt showed and the price and size buttons didn't.

For my photo, I put on the charcoal sweater and my black jeans, propped the phone on a shelf and used the timer. Full length, facing the camera, arms a little away from my sides, daylight from the window. The page says a face-only selfie isn't enough for a full outfit, and with a midi skirt the whole point was where it would end on my legs.

I tapped the **Bottom only** chip so the sweater would stay as it was. In the note box I typed "sweater tucked in at the front".

Choosing photos and settings is free. **Generate in Studio** carries both pictures into the Studio editor, and that's where you sign in and spend paid credits, one per image. I had credits left from the TryAnyOutfit app on my phone, and the same credits work in the web Studio. There's no free trial, but it's cheap to start; plans are on the [pricing page](https://tryanyoutfit.com/#pricing).

## Three looks, same photo

The first preview had the leopard skirt with the sweater half tucked, my black boots, my face, my hair. And it didn't look like a costume. The grey toned the print down. It looked like a person going out on a Saturday.

For the second, I left the note out to see the sweater loose over the waistband. Too much fabric. It hid the top of the skirt and made the whole thing shapeless, so the tuck stayed.

The third credit went to a backup. The same shop had a plain black satin midi, and I ran it with the same photo and the same note. It looked fine. It also looked exactly like every other night I've gone out, which was Jess's complaint in the first place.

The try-on page warns that AI can change prints, seams and proportions, and the print is where I saw it. In the preview the spots came out a little bigger and more evenly spaced than in the product photo, and the satin looked shinier. I kept the shop's photo open beside each result and used the preview for one decision only: leopard with this sweater, yes or no. Yes.

*The outfit I wanted to see on me: a skirt I didn't own yet and a sweater I did.*

## What a preview can't tell you

The page is plain about this too: virtual try-on makes a new image, it doesn't measure your body, and it can't tell you how fabric stretches, feels or fits. So I went back to the shop. The size chart gave the waist in centimetres, and I measured my own waist instead of guessing between S and M. It listed the skirt length as well. I held a tape measure against my leg from the waist down, and the hem landed a few centimetres lower than in the preview, closer to my ankle boots. Returns were free within 30 days, and delivery said Thursday.

It came on Thursday. The length matched the tape measure, not the preview. Satin also creases, which no picture warned me about. I sat on a kitchen chair for ten minutes, and the front had soft lines across the lap when I stood up. Not bad, but visible. I wore it anyway and decided I'd stop checking.

A note on privacy, since I'd uploaded a full-length photo of myself: the try-on page says photos stay on your device and nothing uploads until you choose Create. TryAnyOutfit says uploaded photos are auto-deleted after 72 hours unless you save them. I saved the first preview and sent it to Jess. She replied with "FINALLY."

## Saturday

Our table was close enough to see the setlist taped to the stool. The comedian spent five minutes on the man next to us, who worked in insurance, and none on my skirt. Two people in the line for the bathroom asked where it was from. The sweater stayed tucked until the second half, when I stopped caring.

One honest note: the "I" in this story is an illustrative person. Jess and the club are made up, and so is the skirt. The steps are the real ones on tryanyoutfit.com today, and we make the tool, so read it with that in mind. If there's a print you keep putting back in the cart, take one full-length photo in something you already own and try the piece over it on the [virtual try-on page](/tryon) or in the TryAnyOutfit app on iPhone or Android. A preview can tell you whether a print and a pairing work on you. It can't tell you your size, the exact hem length or how the fabric creases, so check the size chart and the return policy, and use a tape measure. ## Frequently asked questions

### Can I try on a skirt before I buy it?

Yes. On tryanyoutfit.com/tryon, add a full-length photo of yourself in the You box and the shop's product photo or a screenshot in the Outfit box, then choose Generate in Studio. Generating needs sign-in and paid credits, one per image.

### Can I keep my own top and only change the skirt?

Yes. Take the photo in the top you plan to wear and tap the Bottom only chip. The optional note box takes short instructions such as "sweater tucked in at the front".

### Will the leopard print look exactly like the product photo?

Not always. AI can change prints, seams and proportions, so spots may come out bigger or more regular than on the real garment. Keep the shop photo beside each result and use the preview to judge the pairing, not the exact pattern.

### Will the preview tell me what size or length to order?

No. Virtual try-on creates a new image; it doesn't measure your body or show how fabric stretches, feels or fits. Check the size chart and garment length with a tape measure, and read the return policy and delivery date before ordering.

### How much does it cost?

Photo setup on the try-on page is free. Generating uses paid credits shared across the web Studio and the iPhone and Android apps. There's no free trial, but it's cheap to start; current plans are at tryanyoutfit.com/#pricing.
