# How I Planned My Vacation Outfits Before Packing

Before a five-day trip with one carry-on, I took full-length photos in the tops I was packing and tried olive wide-leg trousers over them with TryAnyOutfit's virtual try-on and the Bottom only chip. The previews settled colour and cut; the size chart, the fabric label and a tailor settled the hem and the creases.

Short answer: before a five-day trip with only a carry-on, I tried a pair of olive wide-leg trousers over two full-length photos of me in the tops I was already packing, using TryAnyOutfit's [virtual try-on](/tryon) with the Bottom only chip. The previews settled whether the colour and the cut worked with my own tops, so the trousers went in and a pair of jeans stayed home. The size chart, the fabric label and a tailor sorted out the rest.

*The trousers I wasn't sure about, and the only bag I was taking.*

Dana and I booked Lisbon for the last week of November. Five days, flights at silly hours, and one rule I set for myself: a carry-on and nothing checked. That meant every piece in the bag had to work with every other piece.

My first packing list was the one I always make. Two pairs of jeans, a black turtleneck, my navy striped top, a cream sweater, white trainers for the hills. Dana looked at it and said I'd be wearing the same outfit in every photo. She wasn't wrong.

For weeks I'd had a pair of olive wide-leg trousers saved in a shop's app. I've never owned wide-leg anything. I'm not tall, I wasn't going to walk Lisbon's cobbles in heels, and I couldn't tell if they'd look right with trainers or just swallow me.

## Two photos and one pair of trousers

I'd read TryAnyOutfit's [photo guide for virtual try-on](/blog/virtual-clothes-try-on-photo-guide) before, so I knew what it wanted: full body, facing the camera, arms a little away from my sides, plain light. I took two photos against the bedroom door. One in the turtleneck, jeans and trainers. One in the striped top with the same jeans and trainers.

On the [virtual try-on page](/tryon) there's a row of sample outfits at the top, and by pure luck the one picked for me that day was an ivory outfit with wide-leg trousers. Not my colour, but it was the first time I'd seen the cut on anything other than a model in an ad. The **Outfit** box had that sample in it, so I hit Replace and added a screenshot of the olive trousers from the shop's app, cropped so the price and size buttons didn't show. My turtleneck photo went in the **You** box.

Then I tapped **Bottom only**. I wanted my own top to stay exactly as it was and only the jeans to change.

Choosing photos and settings costs nothing. **Generate in Studio** opens both pictures in the Studio editor, where you sign in and use paid credits, one per image. I had credits on the TryAnyOutfit app on my phone, and the same account works in the browser. There's no free trial, but it's cheap to start; the plans are on the [pricing page](https://tryanyoutfit.com/#pricing).

## What two previews settled

First preview: my own black turtleneck, the olive trousers. It looked like an outfit and not a uniform, which was the whole point. The hem fell over most of the trainers, and my legs didn't look shorter the way I'd feared. Same face, same door, same slightly crooked turtleneck collar.

The second used the striped photo, Bottom only again. I liked it more. Dana's reply when I sent it: "that's the Lisbon one."

So the packing list changed. The olive trousers went in, and the second pair of jeans stayed home. Three tops and two bottoms, all of which went together, and room left over for a folding umbrella.

One thing I kept in mind. The page warns that AI can change prints, seams and proportions, and in my previews the olive came out a shade brighter than the shop's photos. I kept the screenshot open next to each result and used the previews for one thing only, checking that the colour and the cut worked with the tops I was already packing.

## What the preview couldn't tell me

The try-on page says it plainly: it makes a new image, it doesn't measure your body, and it can't tell you how fabric stretches, feels or fits. So sizing was my job. I measured the inside leg of my favourite trousers and compared it with the size chart. The shop listed a long inseam, cut for heels, and I'd be in trainers. I ordered my usual size anyway and planned for a hem.

I also read the fabric label on the listing. Mostly viscose. I've owned viscose before, and I knew it would crease in a carry-on. And I ordered almost three weeks before the flight, so I could still send them back before the trip if they were wrong.

They arrived on a Tuesday. The colour matched the product photos, softer than the preview. With trainers, the hem dragged about three centimetres on the floor, which no picture had shown me. A tailor near my office took them up in two days. I'm glad I didn't skip that, because Lisbon cobbles are wet half the time in November.

Privacy mattered to me too. I'd uploaded two full-length photos of myself. The try-on page says photos stay on your device and nothing uploads until you choose Create, and TryAnyOutfit says uploaded photos are auto-deleted after 72 hours unless you save them. I saved the striped one to send to Dana.

## The trip

I wore the trousers on three of the five days. They came out of the bag creased, as expected. I hung them in the hotel bathroom while I showered, and most of the creases dropped out. It rained hard on day two, and the shortened hem stayed off the wet stones. I didn't miss the second pair of jeans once, and the bag zipped without anyone sitting on it.

One honest note: this story is illustrative. Dana, the trip and the trousers are made up. The steps are the real ones on tryanyoutfit.com today, and we make the tool, so keep that in mind. If you're planning vacation outfits around one new piece, take a full-length photo in the clothes you're already packing and try the new piece over it on the [virtual try-on page](/tryon) or in the TryAnyOutfit app on iPhone or Android. A preview can show you whether a colour and a cut work with what's in your bag. It can't tell you your size, how long the hem is or how a fabric survives a suitcase, so check the size chart and the fabric, then read the return policy before the trip. ## Frequently asked questions

### Can I see new trousers with tops I already own?

Yes. Take a full-length photo of yourself in the top you plan to wear, add the trousers' product photo or a screenshot in the Outfit box on tryanyoutfit.com/tryon, and tap Bottom only so your own top stays as it is. Then choose Generate in Studio.

### How do I plan vacation outfits around one new piece?

Use one photo per top you're packing, keep the same lighting and pose, and try the new piece over each. Keep the product photo beside every result so you compare the real garment, not just the preview.

### Does generating cost anything?

Photo setup on the try-on page is free. Generating needs sign-in and paid credits, one per image, shared across the web Studio and the iPhone and Android apps. There's no free trial, but it's cheap to start; current plans are at tryanyoutfit.com/#pricing.

### Will the preview show my size or the hem length?

No. Virtual try-on creates a new image; it doesn't measure your body or show how fabric stretches, feels or fits. Compare the inseam and the size chart with trousers you own, and check the return window before your trip.

### Will the preview show the exact colour?

Not always. AI can change prints, seams and proportions, and colours can come out a shade off. Keep the shop's product photo open next to each result.

### What happens to my photos?

The try-on page keeps your chosen photos on your device until you choose Create, and TryAnyOutfit auto-deletes uploaded photos after 72 hours unless you save them.
