# How I Picked My Ski Trip Outfit Before Buying a Jacket

Before my first ski trip, I tried a cobalt and a cream ski jacket over a full-length photo of myself in black ski pants with TryAnyOutfit's virtual try-on. The previews settled the colour; measuring with my fleece on against the size chart settled the size.

Short answer: I bought the cobalt ski jacket and dropped the cream one. Before my first ski trip I tried both over one full-length photo of myself in my black ski pants using TryAnyOutfit's [virtual try-on](/tryon), with the Top only chip so the pants stayed the same. The previews settled the colour. For the size, I measured with my fleece on, read the size chart and checked the return window.

My friends booked a cabin for a long weekend in January, and I said yes before I remembered that the last time I skied I was twelve and wearing my cousin's old snowsuit.

Most of the gear sorted itself out. I'm renting skis and boots at the resort, and a helmet comes with them. My sister lent me her black ski pants, which fit well enough over a thermal. The one thing I actually had to buy was a jacket, and I'd narrowed it down to two in my cart: a cobalt blue one and a cream one with a high collar.

On the model, the cream jacket looked like a magazine shoot. The cobalt one looked practical. I couldn't tell which of them would look like me, standing at the top of a slope in black pants, and I didn't want to order both and send one back in the middle of December.

## One photo in what I'd wear under it

I took the photo in my living room against the one plain wall, in daylight from the balcony door. I wore my sister's black ski pants and a black long-sleeve thermal, because that's what would be under the jacket on the day. Phone on a stack of books, ten-second timer, arms a little away from my body, head to toe in frame.

Then I opened the [virtual try-on page](/tryon) on my laptop. When it loads, one of the site's sample outfits is already sitting in the **Outfit** box, and mine was a polka-dot jacket. I pressed **Replace** and added a screenshot of the cobalt jacket from the shop, cropped so the size buttons and the reviews weren't in it. My living room photo went in the **You** box.

Next to the photos there are four chips: Top only, Bottom only, Jacket worn open and Sleeves rolled up. Tapping **Top only** writes those words into the note field, and I added "jacket zipped up, keep my black ski pants" after them. I wanted the jacket changed and the borrowed pants left exactly as they were.

The setup on that page is free. **Generate in Studio** takes both pictures into the Studio editor, where you sign in and use paid credits, one per image. I'd made an account in the TryAnyOutfit app on my phone a while back, and the credits are shared between the app and the browser. There's no free trial, but it's cheap to start; the plans are on the [pricing page](https://tryanyoutfit.com/#pricing).

## Cobalt against the black pants

The cobalt jacket came back on my photo with the pants untouched. The blue was bright next to my face, and with black underneath it looked like a proper ski outfit rather than a city coat. The hem landed just below my hips, which covered the waistband of the pants.

For the cream one I swapped the screenshot in the Outfit box and kept the same photo and the same note. In my living room it looked lovely. Then I tried to picture it on a white slope, in group photos taken from the chairlift, and I realised I'd be a pale shape against pale snow. The black pants also cut the outfit in half more sharply with cream on top than with blue.

Before trusting the cobalt preview, I put it next to the shop's own product photo. The try-on page warns that AI can change prints, seams and proportions, and screens show colour differently. My preview was a shade more purple than the shop's picture, so I went by the shop photo for the exact colour and by the preview for how blue and black looked together on me. The cream jacket came out of the cart.

*What I kept picturing while I compared the two. Cream on that much white disappears.*

## What I checked by hand

The try-on page is plain about this: virtual try-on creates a new image, and it doesn't measure your body or tell you how fabric stretches, feels or fits. For a ski jacket that leaves out most of what matters. A picture can't show whether it keeps you warm or dry, or whether the sleeves still cover your wrists when you reach forward with poles.

So I did the boring part. I put on my grey fleece over the thermal, measured my chest with it on, and compared that with the shop's size chart rather than the size I usually buy. The chart pointed me to one size up, which made sense once I thought about the fleece going underneath. I read the product page for the waterproofing and insulation details, since those were the actual reason to buy a ski jacket instead of wearing my wool coat. Then I checked the return window on the order page and made sure it ran past the date it would arrive, so I could try it on at home with every layer before the trip.

On privacy, I'd uploaded a full-length photo of myself in my living room, so I read what the page says. Your photos stay on your device and nothing uploads until you choose Create. TryAnyOutfit also says uploaded photos are auto-deleted after 72 hours unless you save them. I saved the cobalt preview to send to the group chat and let the cream one go.

## When the box came

The jacket arrived ten days later. I laid it on the bed with the tape measure and the layers I'd wear under it, checked the chest and sleeve against what I'd written down, and then put the whole outfit on in the hallway with the tags still attached.

*The jacket, the tape measure and everything that goes under it. This settled the size; the preview didn't.*

The size from the chart fit over the fleece with room to move. The sleeves still covered my wrists with my arms out in front of me, which I tested by pretending to hold poles in the hallway. The blue in daylight was closer to the shop photo than to my preview, which is what I'd expected after comparing them.

I took the tags off the week before the trip.

One honest note: this story is illustrative. The narrator and everyone around her are made up, cabin included. The steps are the real ones on tryanyoutfit.com today, and we make the tool, so read it with that in mind. If you're choosing a ski jacket from a screenshot, take one full-length photo in the base layer and pants you'll actually wear, then try each colour over it on the [virtual try-on page](/tryon) or in the TryAnyOutfit app on iPhone or Android. The preview is good for colour and length against your own pants. It can't tell you your size, how warm or waterproof a jacket is, or whether it fits over a fleece, so measure with your layers on, read the size chart and check the return date before the trip. ## Frequently asked questions

### Can I try on a ski jacket before I buy it?

Yes, for the look. Take a full-length photo in the base layer and ski pants you'll wear, add a product photo or screenshot of the jacket in the Outfit box on tryanyoutfit.com/tryon, tap Top only so your pants stay the same, then choose Generate in Studio.

### How do I pick a ski jacket colour?

Try each colour over the same photo of you in your ski pants and compare them side by side. Think about how it will look against snow and next to your pants, and check the shop's product photo for the exact shade.

### Does generating cost anything?

Photo setup on the try-on page is free. Generating needs sign-in and paid credits, one per image, shared across the web Studio and the iPhone and Android apps. There's no free trial, but it's cheap to start; current plans are at tryanyoutfit.com/#pricing.

### Will the preview show whether the jacket fits over my layers?

No. Virtual try-on creates a new image; it doesn't measure your body or show how fabric stretches, feels or fits. Measure with your mid-layer on, use the size chart and check the return window.

### Can it tell me if a ski jacket is warm or waterproof?

No. A preview only shows how the jacket looks on you. Read the product page for insulation and waterproofing details.

### What happens to my photos?

The try-on page keeps your chosen photos on your device until you choose Create, and TryAnyOutfit auto-deletes uploaded photos after 72 hours unless you save them.
