# How I Picked My Nutcracker Outfit

Before taking my niece to a December Nutcracker matinee, I tried a tartan pleated skirt and a plum wrap dress over one photo of myself with TryAnyOutfit's virtual try-on and compared each preview with a photo of her red velvet dress. The previews settled which looked festive; measuring a skirt I already own settled the size.

Short answer: the tartan won. I bought the dark green and navy tartan pleated skirt and skipped the plum wrap dress. Before taking my niece to a December Nutcracker matinee, I tried both over one full-length photo of myself in a cream turtleneck and black ankle boots using TryAnyOutfit's [virtual try-on](/tryon), with the Bottom only chip for the skirt. Next to a photo of her red velvet dress, the tartan looked festive while the plum looked like a workday outfit. For the size I measured a skirt I already own against the garment measurements, and I checked the return window.

My sister asked me back in October if I'd take her daughter to see The Nutcracker. A Saturday matinee in mid-December, two o'clock, the old theater downtown with the big staircase. My niece is eight. She'd never been to a ballet, and by the time the tickets were printed and stuck to her fridge she'd already picked her dress: red velvet, a white collar, black patent shoes. It had been hanging on her closet door for weeks.

So the bar was set by an eight-year-old, and I didn't want to show up next to her looking like I'd come from the office.

*Roughly how my two options would have looked side by side, if I'd ordered both.*

I had it down to two. The first was a tartan pleated skirt in dark green and navy with a thin red line running through it, knee length, wool blend. I'd wear it with a cream turtleneck I already own and my black heeled ankle boots. The second was a plum jersey wrap dress with long sleeves, the kind of thing you can sit in for two hours without thinking about it. The skirt felt festive and a little risky. Would it look like Christmas, or like a school uniform? The dress felt safe. I couldn't tell if safe was the right call for a kid's first ballet.

## One photo of me in the top and boots I'd keep

I didn't want to order both and send one back, so on a Sunday I took one full-length photo against the hallway wall. Cream turtleneck, black straight trousers, the ankle boots. Phone on the shoe rack, ten-second timer, arms slightly away from my sides so the waist was visible. The try-on page warns that a face-only selfie isn't enough for a full outfit, and a skirt is all about where the waist and hem land.

On my laptop I opened the [virtual try-on page](/tryon). A sample outfit is always sitting in the **Outfit** box when it loads, so I pressed **Replace** and added the shop's photo of the tartan skirt, cropped so only the skirt was in it. My hallway photo went into the **You** box.

Beside the two boxes are four chips: Top only, Bottom only, Jacket worn open and Sleeves rolled up. I wanted to keep my own sweater and swap just the trousers, so I tapped **Bottom only**. It drops those words into the note field, and I added "tuck in my cream turtleneck, keep my black ankle boots" after them.

Setting all that up is free, and the page says nothing uploads until you choose Create. **Generate in Studio** takes both pictures into the Studio, where you sign in and spend paid credits. I already had the TryAnyOutfit app on my iPhone, and the same credits work on the web. There's no free trial. It's cheap to start, and the plans are on the [pricing page](https://tryanyoutfit.com/#pricing).

## Tartan or plum

The tartan came back first, with my own turtleneck tucked in and the boots still there. My worry about the school uniform went away fast. With cream on top and a heeled boot, it looked like a grown-up winter outfit, and the dark green carried most of it. Then I opened the photo my sister had sent of my niece in her red dress and put it next to my preview. The thin red line in the tartan picked up her velvet. We looked like we were going to the same place.

For the plum dress I pressed Replace, cleared the note and typed "keep my black ankle boots, add black tights". The preview was nice. Plum suits me, and the wrap made a good waist. But next to the red velvet it looked like something I'd wear to a Tuesday meeting. Nothing was wrong with it, it just didn't feel like the Nutcracker.

I sent my sister both previews with no hint about which I liked. She showed them to my niece, who picked the skirt because it had red in it, like her dress. That settled it.

Before ordering I set the tartan preview next to the shop photo, because the try-on page says AI can change prints, seams and proportions. It had redrawn the check. The red lines sat a little closer together and the pleats looked crisper than real wool would. So I went by the product photo for the pattern and by the listed length for the hem. The preview answered the question I'd brought to it: whether the skirt looked festive on me, next to her.

*The kind of lobby we'd be standing in before curtain. Red and gold everywhere.*

## What the preview couldn't settle

Virtual try-on makes a new image. It doesn't measure your body or tell you how fabric stretches, feels or fits, and the page says so. A wool skirt left me a few questions to answer another way.

Size first. Pleated skirts sit at the natural waist, which isn't where my trousers sit. I took a skirt I already own, laid it flat, measured the waistband and the length, and checked those against the garment measurements instead of my usual letter. The waist matched one size down from what I'd have guessed.

Then the itch. The skirt was mostly wool, and I'd be sitting for two acts plus an intermission. Thick black tights fixed that, and they helped on the cold walk from the parking garage.

Then creasing. Pleats and two hours in a theater seat don't always get along. I couldn't learn that from a picture, so I planned to smooth the skirt under me when I sat down and stand up at intermission.

Then returns. I checked the return window and ordered early enough to send it back if it went wrong.

On privacy, I'd just put a full-length photo of myself into a website, so I read what happens to it. TryAnyOutfit auto-deletes uploaded photos after 72 hours unless you save them. I saved the two previews I'd sent my sister and nothing else.

## Matinee day

The skirt came the following Thursday. I laid it on the bed with the tape measure across the waistband and checked it against my notes, then tried it on with the turtleneck, tights and boots in front of the hall mirror. The waist was right, the length hit just below my knee, and the wool was softer than I'd feared with tights underneath.

*Measuring the skirt the day it arrived. The tape measure answered the size question, and the preview answered the festive one.*

On the day, my niece wore her red velvet and held my hand all the way up the staircase. She spent the first act leaning forward in her seat. At intermission she wanted a photo by the tree, and that's the one on my sister's fridge now: red velvet next to tartan, both of us squinting at the lights. I've worn the skirt twice more since, to a work lunch and to my parents' on Christmas Eve.

One honest note: this story is illustrative. The narrator and the matinee are made up. The steps are the real ones on tryanyoutfit.com today, and we make the tool, so weigh it accordingly. If you're working out what to wear to the Nutcracker or any ballet, take one plain full-length photo in the top and shoes you'll keep, try each option over it on the [virtual try-on page](/tryon) or in the TryAnyOutfit app on iPhone or Android, and look at each preview next to a photo of whoever you're going with. The preview is good for colour and for how festive a piece looks on you. It can't show your size, how wool feels after two hours or how pleats crease, so measure something you already own, read the fabric line and check the return window. ## Frequently asked questions

### Can I try on a Nutcracker outfit before I buy it?

Yes, for the look. Take a full-length photo in the top and shoes you plan to keep, add a product photo or screenshot of the skirt or dress in the Outfit box on tryanyoutfit.com/tryon, add your photo in the You box, pick a chip such as Bottom only if you're swapping just one piece, then choose Generate in Studio.

### How do I try on just a skirt and keep my own top?

Tap the Bottom only chip next to the Outfit and You boxes. It adds those words to the note field, and you can type more after them, for example to keep your sweater tucked in or keep your boots.

### What should I wear to the Nutcracker or the ballet?

There's no single dress code, and it varies by theater and performance. Festive colours, a skirt or dress you can sit in for two hours and warm layers for winter are common choices. Trying two options on the same photo of yourself shows which one looks right on you before you order.

### Does generating cost anything?

Photo setup on the try-on page is free. Generating needs sign-in and paid credits, shared across the web Studio and the iPhone and Android apps. There's no free trial, but it's cheap to start; current plans are at tryanyoutfit.com/#pricing.

### Will the preview tell me my skirt size?

No. Virtual try-on creates a new image; it doesn't measure your body or show how fabric stretches, feels or fits, and it can redraw prints like tartan. Measure a skirt you already own flat, compare it with the garment measurements and check the return window.

### What happens to my photos?

The try-on page keeps your chosen photos on your device until you choose Create, and TryAnyOutfit auto-deletes uploaded photos after 72 hours unless you save them.
