# How I Picked My Ice Skating Outfit

Before a December evening at an outdoor ice rink, I tried a cropped cherry-red puffer and a long black puffer coat over one photo of myself with TryAnyOutfit's virtual try-on, then the shop's cream version. The previews settled colour and length; measuring my sweater against the size chart settled the size.

Short answer: I bought the cropped puffer in cream and skipped the long black puffer coat. Before an evening at an outdoor ice rink in December, I tried a cherry-red cropped puffer and a long black coat over one full-length photo of myself in a chunky sweater, leggings and a beanie using TryAnyOutfit's [virtual try-on](/tryon), with a typed note to keep the jacket zipped. The long coat's hem sat right over where skate boots go, and the red was loud on me, so I checked the shop's cream version the same way. For the size I measured my sweater against the jacket's pit-to-pit measurement, and I checked the return window.

My two roommates from college were coming to stay the second weekend of December, and one of them had already booked us a 6 p.m. session at the outdoor rink downtown. The one with the string lights and the big tree. I said yes in the group chat before I remembered I hadn't been on skates since a sixth-grade birthday party.

I wasn't worried about the skating so much. I was worried about the coat. My only winter coat is a long camel wool one I wear to work, and I did not want to fall on wet ice in it. So I needed a new jacket, and I had about three weeks.

*Roughly what my two options would have looked like on the wall, if I'd ordered both.*

I had it down to two. The first was a short cropped puffer in cherry red that hit at the waist. It looked fun, and I liked the idea of something bright in the photos. The second was a long black puffer coat, the kind that goes to mid-calf and that half the city wears from November to March. Warm and sensible, and very close to what I wear on my commute. I kept going back and forth. Was red too much on me? Would a long coat even work on skates?

## One photo in what I'd actually skate in

I didn't want to order both and send one back, so on a Saturday morning I took one full-length photo in the hallway. Chunky grey sweater, black fleece-lined leggings, the grey beanie I'd be wearing anyway. Phone propped on the shoe rack, ten-second timer, arms a little away from my sides. The try-on page says a face-only selfie isn't enough for a full outfit, and with jackets the whole question is where the hem lands.

On my laptop I opened the [virtual try-on page](/tryon). There's always a sample outfit in the **Outfit** box when it loads, so I pressed **Replace** and added the shop's photo of the red puffer, cropped so the jacket was the only thing in it. My hallway photo went into the **You** box.

There are four chips next to the boxes: Top only, Bottom only, Jacket worn open and Sleeves rolled up. I wanted the jacket closed, the way I'd wear it on the ice, so I skipped the chips and typed my own note: "zipped up, keep my black leggings and grey beanie".

None of that costs anything, and the page says nothing uploads until you choose Create. **Generate in Studio** carries both pictures over to the Studio, where you sign in and spend paid credits. I had the TryAnyOutfit app on my phone already, and the credits are the same on the web. There's no free trial. It's cheap to start, and the plans are on the [pricing page](https://tryanyoutfit.com/#pricing).

## Red, black, then cream

The red puffer came back first, zipped, with my leggings and beanie still there. The length was right. It stopped at my waist, so my legs were free, and with the leggings it looked like I was dressed to move. But the red was loud on me. I have auburn hair and I go pink in the cold, and the preview was all red from the beanie down. It also looked brighter than on the shop's page. The page warns that AI can change prints, seams and proportions, so I held the preview next to the product photo before I blamed the jacket.

For the black coat I pressed Replace, kept the same note and ran it again. It looked warm and it looked like me on a Tuesday. Then I looked at where the hem was: mid-calf, right over the top of where the skate boots would be. I pictured bending my knees with all that coat around them, and then falling in it. That settled it. Short jacket.

The shop also sold the cropped puffer in cream. Before ordering it blind, I went back to the red preview and typed "make the jacket cream" into the note box. That's a text instruction, so the cream I got was the AI's idea of cream and not the shop's. It still told me something: the light colour sat much better with my hair and the grey sweater. Then I did it properly and put the shop's own photo of the cream version in with Replace. Their cream was a little warmer than the AI's guess, closer to oatmeal, and I liked it more.

*The kind of rink we'd be on. Mostly dark, lots of warm lights, so a light jacket would actually show up in photos.*

## What the preview couldn't settle

Virtual try-on makes a new picture. It doesn't measure your body or tell you how fabric stretches, feels or fits, and the page says that too. A puffer left me with questions I had to answer another way.

Size first. I'd be wearing a chunky sweater underneath, and cropped puffers are often cut boxy and short. I laid my grey sweater flat, measured it across the chest, and compared that with the jacket's pit-to-pit measurement in the size chart instead of trusting my usual letter. I wanted at least two inches of room so I could still lift my arms, which you do a lot when you're trying not to fall. That put me one size up from my usual.

Then the sleeves. A preview can't raise your arms. I checked the listed sleeve length against my own arm so the cuffs would still cover my glove openings when I reached forward.

Then warmth and wet ice. A picture shows puff, not fill. I read the fill and shell lines on the listing, and the shell was water-resistant, which mattered because I fully expected to sit down on the ice at least once. Cream also shows dirt, so I checked that the care label said machine washable.

Then returns. I checked the return window and ordered with enough time to swap the size if I got it wrong.

On privacy, I'd just put a full-length photo of myself into a website, so I read what happens to it. TryAnyOutfit auto-deletes uploaded photos after 72 hours unless you save them. I saved the cream preview to send to my roommates and nothing else.

## The rink

The jacket arrived ten days later. I laid it out on the bed with the tape measure across the chest and checked it against my notes, then put it on over the grey sweater and lifted my arms over my head in front of the hall mirror. There was room, the cuffs stayed over my wrists, and it came to just below the waistband of my leggings.

*Checking the jacket the day it came. The tape measure answered the size question. The preview had already answered the colour one.*

On the night, I fell once, about twenty minutes in, sideways onto my hip. The shell wiped off with a glove. My roommates took a photo of the three of us under the tree, and I'm the light one in the middle instead of the red one. I've worn the jacket almost every weekend since.

One honest note: this story is illustrative. The narrator and the rink are made up. The steps are the real ones on tryanyoutfit.com today, and we make the tool, so weigh it accordingly. If you're working out what to wear ice skating, take one full-length photo in the layers you'll skate in, try each jacket over it on the [virtual try-on page](/tryon) or in the TryAnyOutfit app on iPhone or Android, and check the hem in each preview. The preview is good for colour and length on you. It can't show your size, whether you can lift your arms or how warm the fill is, so measure the layer you'll wear underneath, read the fill and shell lines and check the return window. ## Frequently asked questions

### Can I try on an ice skating outfit before I buy it?

Yes, for the look. Take a full-length photo in the layers you'll skate in, add a product photo or screenshot of the jacket in the Outfit box on tryanyoutfit.com/tryon, add your photo in the You box, type a note such as zipped up, keep my leggings and beanie, then choose Generate in Studio.

### Can I see a jacket in another colour?

You can type an instruction like make the jacket cream in the note field, but the result is the AI's idea of that colour, not the shop's. If the shop sells the colour, use its own product photo with Replace for a closer comparison.

### What should I wear ice skating?

Layers you can move in, a jacket that stops at the hip or waist so your knees are free, gloves and a hat are common choices for an outdoor rink. A water-resistant shell helps if you fall on wet ice. Trying jackets on the same photo of yourself shows the colour and length on you before you order.

### Does generating cost anything?

Photo setup on the try-on page is free. Generating needs sign-in and paid credits, shared across the web Studio and the iPhone and Android apps. There's no free trial, but it's cheap to start; current plans are at tryanyoutfit.com/#pricing.

### Will the preview tell me my jacket size?

No. Virtual try-on creates a new image; it doesn't measure your body or show how fabric stretches, feels or fits, and it can change seams and proportions. Measure the layer you'll wear underneath, compare it with the garment measurements and check the return window.

### What happens to my photos?

The try-on page keeps your chosen photos on your device until you choose Create, and TryAnyOutfit auto-deletes uploaded photos after 72 hours unless you save them.
