# How I Picked a Blazer for My Friend's Winter Wedding

For my college roommate's December wedding with a cocktail dress code, I tried a forest-green wool blazer over my own grey trousers and a new navy suit on one photo of myself with TryAnyOutfit's virtual try-on. The navy matched the groomsmen, so I chose the blazer, then measured a jacket that fits and booked a tailor for the sleeves.

Short answer: for my friend's December wedding I wore a forest-green wool blazer open over my own grey trousers and white shirt, not a new navy suit. I tried both on one full-length photo of myself with TryAnyOutfit's [virtual try-on](/tryon), using the Jacket worn open chip, and the navy suit looked just like the groomsmen's. A preview can't show size or the true color, so I compared garment measurements with a jacket that fits, checked the green in daylight and left ten days for a tailor to shorten the sleeves.

My college roommate got engaged in the spring and set the wedding for the second Saturday in December, in an old stone barn about an hour out of the city. The invitation came in October. Under the date and the address it said "Cocktail attire." Two weeks later the group chat filled up with photos from the groomsmen's fitting: five navy suits, white shirts, burgundy ties.

I'm not a groomsman. I'm the guy who'll give a short toast after dinner if nobody else volunteers, which means at some point I'll be standing up with a microphone in front of everyone.

*The two options I was stuck between, more or less.*

What I own for weddings is one black suit I bought for a funeral years ago and a pair of charcoal-grey wool trousers left over from a suit whose jacket stopped fitting across the shoulders. I have white shirts. I have one pair of brown leather shoes I actually like. The black suit felt too somber for a December wedding, and I wasn't going to wear it to a party where I'd also be making jokes.

So I had two ideas. The safe one was a new navy two-piece suit. The other was a forest-green wool blazer, worn open over my own grey trousers and a white shirt, no tie. Navy would never be wrong. It would also put me in the same color as the five people standing next to the groom.

## One photo, two options

I took one photo in the bedroom on a Sunday afternoon. Phone leaning on the dresser, ten-second timer, standing straight with my arms a little away from my sides. I wore the grey trousers, a white shirt and the brown shoes, so the only thing missing was a jacket.

On my laptop I opened the [virtual try-on page](/tryon). It opens with a sample garment already in the **Outfit** box. Mine was a polka-dot jacket, which made me laugh. I pressed **Replace** and pasted a screenshot of the green blazer from the store's product page, cropped so only the jacket was in it. My bedroom photo went into the **You** box.

There are four chips next to the boxes: Top only, Bottom only, Jacket worn open and Sleeves rolled up. I wear blazers open, so I tapped **Jacket worn open**. It drops those words into the note field, and I typed "keep my grey trousers and white shirt" after them.

The setup is free, and the page says nothing uploads until you choose Create. **Generate in Studio** takes both pictures into the Studio, where you sign in and use paid credits. I already had the TryAnyOutfit app on my iPhone, and the credits are shared with the browser version. There's no free trial. It's cheap to start, and the plans are on the [pricing page](https://tryanyoutfit.com/#pricing).

## Green or navy

The green blazer came back first. There I was in my own bedroom and my own trousers, wearing something that looked like it belonged at a wedding. The color was darker than I expected, closer to a pine tree than a golf course, and it went with the brown shoes better than I thought it would.

For the suit I pressed Replace, added the navy suit listing, cleared the note and typed "navy suit, keep my white shirt and brown shoes." It looked good. It also looked exactly like the groomsmen's photos from the chat. In a reception room full of navy and grey, I'd have been one more dark jacket in the back of every picture, except during the toast, when I'd have looked like I'd forgotten my tie.

I sent both previews to my sister, who has opinions. She replied with one word: "green." Then, a minute later: "lose the tie idea."

Before I ordered, I put the green preview next to the store's product photo. The try-on page warns that AI can change details and proportions. In mine the lapels came out a little narrower than on the listing. So I went by the product photos for details like lapel width and the buttons. What the preview answered was the question I actually had: did a green blazer look like me, at a wedding, with clothes I already owned. It did.

## What the preview couldn't tell me

A virtual try-on makes a new picture of you in the clothes. It doesn't measure your body, and the try-on page says that too. For a jacket, fit is most of the job, so I had a few more things to check.

Shoulders first. A blazer that's too wide in the shoulders can't really be fixed, and that was the whole reason my old suit jacket had stopped fitting. I took my best-fitting jacket out of the closet, laid it flat and measured it seam to seam across the shoulders, then across the chest from armpit to armpit, then the sleeve from the shoulder seam to the cuff. I compared those numbers with the size chart's garment measurements rather than with my chest size, and picked the size that matched the shoulders.

Then the sleeves. The size that fit my shoulders was listed with a sleeve about an inch longer than mine. That's normal for me, and it's the easy alteration. I called a tailor near my office and asked how long a sleeve job takes in December. Ten days, he said, longer closer to Christmas. That set my order date.

Then the color in real light. A green on a screen can turn out olive, teal or almost black, and the preview can only show what the listing photo shows. When the blazer came I took it to the window and held it against the grey trousers in daylight, then checked it again under a warm lamp, since that's the light everyone would see me in at the reception. It held up under both.

Then the fabric. The listing said wool blend, which mattered for a barn in December and for the walk from the car park. I checked that the blazer had a lining, because I'd be wearing it for six hours with a shirt under it and wanted it to slide on easily. No preview can tell you how a fabric feels on you.

And returns. I kept the tags on, didn't let the tailor touch it until I'd tried it with the whole outfit, and checked the return window, because once a sleeve is shortened you can't send it back.

On privacy, since I'd put a full-length photo of myself into a website: TryAnyOutfit auto-deletes uploaded photos after 72 hours unless you save them. I saved the two previews I'd sent my sister and nothing else.

## The wedding

The blazer arrived on a Thursday. I laid it out on the bed with the grey trousers, a white shirt and the brown shoes, put the tape measure on the sleeve and wrote down how much the tailor should take off.

*The evening it arrived. The tape measure settled the sleeves; the window settled the green.*

The sleeves came back with a week to spare. On the day I wore the blazer open with the white shirt buttoned to the top button and no tie, the grey trousers and the brown shoes, and put a heavy wool coat over it for the photos outside. During the toast I didn't look like a sixth groomsman. Afterwards the groom's mother asked where I'd found the jacket, which I'm counting as a win.

One honest note: this story is illustrative. The narrator, the friend and the wedding are made up. The steps are the real ones on tryanyoutfit.com today, and we make the tool, so weigh that. If you're working out a men's wedding guest outfit, read the dress code on the invitation (our [men's wedding guest outfit guide](/blog/mens-wedding-guest-outfit) explains each one), and if you can, find out what the wedding party is wearing so you don't match them by accident. Take one photo in the trousers and shoes you'll keep and try each jacket on the [virtual try-on page](/tryon) or in the TryAnyOutfit app on iPhone or Android. The preview is useful for seeing whether a color or a style looks like you, with what you already own. It can't show your size, the true color of the cloth or how warm it is, so compare garment measurements with a jacket that fits, look at the color in daylight, leave time for a tailor and read the return terms before you alter anything. Our [men's outfit generator guide](/blog/mens-outfit-generator) covers other ways to plan a look, the guide to [trying on outfits for events](/blog/try-on-virtual-clothes-for-events) covers fixed dates, and the [photo guide](/blog/virtual-clothes-try-on-photo-guide) covers what makes a good starting photo. ## Frequently asked questions

### What should a man wear to a winter wedding as a guest?

Start with the dress code on the invitation. For cocktail attire a suit or a tailored blazer with wool trousers works, with leather shoes and a warm coat for photos outside. December suits darker colors and heavier cloth. If you know what the wedding party is wearing, avoid matching it.

### Is a blazer with trousers OK for cocktail attire?

Usually, yes. Pick a tailored wool blazer and wear it with dress trousers and leather shoes. If the invitation says black tie or formal, a suit or tuxedo is the safer choice, and it's fine to ask the couple when you're unsure.

### Can I try on a blazer online before I buy it?

Yes, for the look. Take one full-length photo in the trousers and shoes you'll keep, add the product photo or a cropped listing screenshot in the Outfit box on tryanyoutfit.com/tryon, add your photo in the You box, tap Jacket worn open if you wear it open, and choose Generate in Studio.

### Will the preview show if the blazer fits?

No. The preview doesn't measure your body. Lay a jacket that fits you flat and measure it across the shoulders, then compare that number with the garment measurements on the size chart. Leave time for a tailor if the sleeves need shortening.

### Does generating cost anything?

Photo setup on the try-on page is free. Generating needs sign-in and paid credits, shared across the web Studio and the iPhone and Android apps. There's no free trial, but it's cheap to start; current plans are at tryanyoutfit.com/#pricing.

### What happens to my photos?

The try-on page keeps your chosen photos on your device until you choose Create, and TryAnyOutfit auto-deletes uploaded photos after 72 hours unless you save them.
