# Cocktail Attire for Men at a Wedding: What Works

Cocktail attire for men at a wedding is a matching suit with a dress shirt and leather shoes, tie worn to the ceremony. Go dark after 6 p.m., lighter in daylight, and try flannel or color in winter.

Cocktail attire for men at a wedding is a matching suit with a dress shirt and leather shoes. Wear a tie to the ceremony and decide at the reception. After 6 p.m., go darker: charcoal or navy. In daylight you can wear a lighter blue or grey, and cocktail is the code where a green or brown suit finally gets a turn.

"Cocktail" sounds like a party. It isn't one. I read it as "wear a good suit, and have a little fun with the color and the tie". For the full ladder from black tie down to beach, see the [men's wedding guest outfit](/blog/mens-wedding-guest-outfit) guide. This page only covers cocktail: outfits by time and season, the tie question, and the wording variants that show up on cards.

## TL;DR

- Evening (after 6 p.m.) or indoors: a charcoal or navy suit with a white shirt and silk tie. Oxfords in black or dark brown.
- Daytime or summer: mid-blue or light grey suit in a lightweight wool or wool-linen, knit tie, suede loafers.
- Fall and winter: a flannel suit in bottle green, brown or charcoal, plus a real overcoat.
- "Casual cocktail" or "coastal cocktail": the suit stays, the tie can go.
- Too much: a tuxedo. Too little: jeans, sneakers, or a blazer over chinos after dark.

## What cocktail attire means for men

The Emily Post Institute's attire guide has no separate cocktail entry. Cocktail dresses sit under semi-formal, and the men's list there is short. It asks for a dark business suit and a dress shirt with a tie. Shoes are leather, socks dark, and a matching vest is optional. Its one timing rule is that after 6 in the evening you should err on the side of formality.

So for men, cocktail and [semi-formal](/blog/semi-formal-wedding-attire-men) share the same floor. The words change what women wear more than what you wear. Where cocktail gives you more room is everything around the suit. A patterned tie, a colored pocket square, a suit that isn't navy. The structure doesn't move: matching jacket and trousers, collared shirt, leather shoes.

It sits one step below [formal](/blog/formal-wedding-attire-men) and black tie optional, where a dark suit and conservative tie are the minimum. And it sits one step above dressy casual, where a sport coat with odd trousers is enough. If your outfit would pass at a [casual wedding](/blog/casual-wedding-attire-men), it's too relaxed for this one.

## Evening reception: charcoal suit, white shirt, silk tie

Most cocktail weddings happen in the evening. So this is the outfit I'd build first: a charcoal two-piece with a white dress shirt and a dark green silk tie. Add a burgundy pocket square. Then black cap-toe oxfords and a black belt.

*Charcoal and a green tie. Dark enough for after 6 p.m., not as stiff as black.*

The tie is where you show taste. Green, burgundy or a small pattern all work. Avoid a tie in the exact wedding color unless you're in the wedding party, or you'll look like a groomsman who lost his boutonniere.

At a hotel ballroom or a downtown venue, keep the shoes black and polished. A restaurant or loft wedding gives you room for dark brown.

## Daytime or summer: lighter suit, knit tie, loafers

A lunchtime or afternoon wedding lets the suit lighten up. Mid-blue or light grey in a tropical wool or wool-linen blend breathes better than a winter worsted. Pair it with a white shirt and a navy knit tie. Tan suede loafers and a cream pocket square finish it.

Heat changes the fabric. It doesn't change the code. The jacket still matches the trousers, and you keep it on through the ceremony. Once the couple's jackets come off at the reception, yours can too.

Grass and gravel are hard on thin leather soles. Loafers or derbies with a rubber sole handle a lawn better than oxfords.

## Fall and winter: flannel, color, a real coat

Colder months are the best time to wear a suit that isn't navy. Bottle green, chocolate brown or mid-grey flannel all look right at a cocktail wedding in November. Wear it with a pale blue shirt, a navy grenadine tie and dark brown oxfords.

*Green flannel with a navy tie. The overcoat matters as much as the suit in December.*

The coat is the part guys forget. A dark wool overcoat over a suit looks finished. A puffer or a rain shell over a suit looks like the commute home. If you only own the puffer, leave it in the car.

## "Casual cocktail", "coastal cocktail" and other wording

Couples like to soften the code with a word in front of it. Here's how I'd read the common ones:

| Wording on the card | What I'd wear |
|---|---|
| Cocktail attire | Matching suit, dress shirt, tie, leather shoes |
| Casual cocktail | Matching suit, open collar allowed, loafers fine |
| Coastal or beach cocktail | Light linen-blend or cotton suit, open collar, suede loafers |
| Cocktail chic or festive cocktail | Dark suit with a bolder tie, pocket square or a velvet jacket in winter |

None of these mean "no jacket". If the wedding website shows photos of the venue, check them. A beach ceremony on sand means loafers you can slip off, not sandals.

## Tie or no tie?

Emily Post's list includes a tie, so that's the default. I'd wear one to the ceremony every time. It's the easiest piece to take off later and the hardest to conjure in a parking lot.

Going without? Make it look deliberate: a shirt with a collar stiff enough to stand under the lapels, one button undone, and a pocket square doing the work the tie would have done. That's a "casual cocktail" move. At a church ceremony or an evening ballroom I'd keep the tie on.

## What not to wear to a cocktail wedding

- A tuxedo. It belongs to black tie and looks like you misread the card.
- Jeans, chinos or a blazer with odd trousers at an evening wedding.
- Sneakers, including clean white leather ones, and boat shoes.
- A short-sleeve shirt under the jacket. The cuff should show.
- An all-white or ivory suit that competes with the couple.
- The groomsmen's exact suit and tie combination.

## See the suit color on your photo first

Choosing between charcoal and that green flannel is easier when you can see both on yourself. On [TryAnyOutfit](/tryon), add a photo of yourself and a photo or screenshot of the suit, and the preview goes on your real photo, not an avatar. The **Jacket worn open** chip shows how the suit reads with the jacket unbuttoned, the way it'll look at the reception.

It shows how the look reads on you. It won't tell you your size or how the shoulders fit, so check the shop's measurements and get the trousers hemmed. It runs on phones (iPhone and Android) and in the web Studio, with credits shared. It's cheap to start; current options are on the [pricing page](https://tryanyoutfit.com/#pricing). Uploaded photos are auto-deleted after 72 hours unless you save them.

If the groomsmen turn out to be in the navy you'd planned, switch colors. That's the whole story of [how I picked a blazer for a winter wedding](/blog/how-i-picked-a-blazer-for-a-winter-wedding). ## Frequently asked questions

### What is cocktail attire for men at a wedding?

A matching suit with a dress shirt, a tie and leather dress shoes with dark socks. The Emily Post Institute lists this under semi-formal, where cocktail dresses also sit.

### Do men have to wear a tie for cocktail attire?

A tie is the default and the safest choice for the ceremony. At a casual cocktail or coastal cocktail wedding, an open collar with a pocket square is fine.

### What is the difference between cocktail and semi-formal for men?

For men there is very little. Both mean a matching suit. Cocktail tends to allow more color in the suit, tie and pocket square.

### What color suit should I wear to a cocktail wedding?

Charcoal or navy for evening events. Mid-blue or light grey in daylight or summer. Green, brown or grey flannel works well in fall and winter.

### Can I wear a tuxedo to a cocktail wedding?

No. A tuxedo belongs to black tie and black tie optional. At cocktail it looks like you misread the invitation.
