# ChatGPT Adds Virtual Try-On: What It Does and Where It Stops

ChatGPT added a Try on button to clothing and accessory listings, plus item-photo uploads, on mobile and web. OpenAI says results don't guarantee fit or size. A dedicated try-on app still helps for any screenshot, part-only edits and recolors on your own photo.

TL;DR: ChatGPT now has a Try on button on clothing and accessory listings, and you can also upload a photo of an item and ask to see it on you. It's on mobile and web, it saves your reference photo for next time, and OpenAI says results don't guarantee fit or size. For outfits from any screenshot, part-only edits and recolors on your own photo, a dedicated try-on app still has a place.

**News, 30 October 2026.** OpenAI added virtual try-on to shopping in ChatGPT, and the feature launched on 1 October 2026. We make a try-on app, so we read this one closely. We think it's a real step for chat shopping, and it changes when you'd reach for a separate tool.

## What happened

OpenAI's release notes list "New ways to shop in ChatGPT" in the October 2, 2026 entry. Two features came together:

- Virtual try-on: a "Try on" button appears on product listings for clothes and accessories. You take or upload a selfie, and ChatGPT generates the try-on image with ChatGPT Images.
- Favorites and folders: save products to Favorites or to folders in Library.

TechCrunch covered the launch on October 1 and described it as a global rollout. Its report says the features use OpenAI's ChatGPT Images 2.5 model. OpenAI's Help Center lists availability as "Available in ChatGPT on mobile and web."

There are two ways in, according to OpenAI's Help Center article on shopping with ChatGPT search.

From a shopping result, ask for clothes or accessories, select Try on on a listing, then take or upload a selfie. ChatGPT shows the generated image.

From your own image, upload a picture of a garment or accessory in a conversation and ask ChatGPT to show how it could look on you. TechCrunch's example is a web screenshot.

ChatGPT also saves your photo so you don't upload it each time. You can change or delete it under Settings, Personalization, Reference photos.

## What OpenAI says about the limits

OpenAI's own wording is direct: "Try-on images may not represent the product or your appearance exactly and do not guarantee fit or size." The same page tells shoppers to check the merchant's measurements and return policy before buying.

Some details aren't on the pages we checked. OpenAI doesn't list plan or usage limits for try-on, which listings qualify, or how follow-up edits to a try-on image behave. We left those out instead of guessing.

## Why it matters

Shopping chat and try-on now sit in one place. You can ask for a coat, see it on you, and save it to a folder without switching apps. That's useful for anyone who already shops through ChatGPT.

It also raises the bar for try-on apps. A standalone tool has to do something a chat button can't, or it's an extra step.

## How TryAnyOutfit fits

TryAnyOutfit puts an outfit from any photo or screenshot onto your real photo, not an avatar. You can use it on iPhone and Android or in the web [Studio](/tryon), with one pool of credits. You can change only the top or only the bottom, and recolor a piece with a text instruction such as "make the jacket olive."

| | ChatGPT Try On | TryAnyOutfit |
|---|---|---|
| What you start from | A shopping result, or an item image you upload | Any outfit photo or screenshot |
| Where it runs | ChatGPT on mobile and web | iPhone, Android and web Studio |
| Saving | Favorites and folders in Library; reference photo saved | Saved looks on your own photo |
| Extra tools | Ask ChatGPT in the same chat | Top only, Bottom only, text recolor |
| Price | Plan limits not published by OpenAI | Cheap to start, see [pricing](https://tryanyoutfit.com/#pricing) |
| Limits | No fit or size guarantee | Not a fit or size tool |

ChatGPT is enough when you're already chatting about what to buy, the item shows up in results, and one quick preview answers the question.

A dedicated app fits better when you found the look on Instagram or in a store screenshot, you want to swap only the trousers, or you want to try the same piece in three colors on the same photo. Our guide to [trying on clothes from a store screenshot](/blog/try-on-clothes-from-store-screenshot) walks through that.

Neither tool measures you. A generated image can shift a pattern, a hem or a proportion. Check the size chart and the return policy before you order, whichever app you used.

TryAnyOutfit has no free trial, but it's cheap to start. Uploaded photos are auto-deleted after 72 hours unless you save them.

Google has its own try-on in Shopping, which we cover in [TryAnyOutfit vs Google try-on](/compare/tryanyoutfit-vs-google-try-on) and [Google Doppl alternatives](/blog/google-doppl-alternatives).
