Short answer: Cladwell is the best capsule wardrobe app if you want the capsule built for you, since it groups your clothes into capsules for a season, work or travel. Indyx is the best free pick, with capsules included in its free plan. If you're starting from zero, Capsule Wardrobe Builder hands you a checklist of 50+ essentials and shows how many outfits they make.

A capsule wardrobe is a small set of clothes that all work together. Plenty of wardrobe apps can hold one. Only a few treat the capsule as a feature, and we'd rather rank by that than by closet size.

We make TryAnyOutfit, the last app on this list. It doesn't build capsules. It's there for one job: seeing a new piece on your own photo before it joins the rest.

## Cladwell: built around capsules

Cladwell describes itself as "inspired by capsule wardrobe and intentional living principles", and the listing backs that up with a feature for it: create capsule wardrobes by season, work or travel to focus on the clothes that matter right now. You don't have to photograph everything either. The site says you can pick from 15,000 cataloged items or paste a product link.

The rest of the app pushes the same way. A short style quiz gives you a Style Map, and three questions find your color season. Daily outfit ideas come from your own closet and the weather, and you can chat with an AI stylist about what to pack. Then there's See it on me, which previews outfits from your closet on a photo of you.

Cataloging your closet is free. See it on me and some other features need a subscription. The US App Store listing quotes $39.99 a year with a 7-day free trial for eligible new subscribers, and buying on Cladwell's site costs $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year. It's rated 4.3 from about 1,000 App Store ratings and 4.0 on Google Play.

## Indyx: capsules on the free plan

For a capsule app that costs nothing, Indyx is the one. Items and outfits are unlimited on the free plan, and so are capsules. The App Store listing puts it plainly: use Collections to build seasonal capsules or packing lists. A calendar tracks what you wear. Sort the closet by cost per wear and the pieces that don't belong in a capsule stand out fast.

If you'd rather hand the job to a person, Indyx sells human styling too. Its Lookbook service starts at $150 for ten outfits styled from your closet, and Indyx pitches it for a seasonal refresh or a vacation capsule. The Lookbook Mini starts at $60 for three outfits. Insider, the paid membership, costs $12.99 a month or $74.99 a year and adds analytics. Ratings: 4.8 from about 1,600 on iPhone, 4.5 on Google Play.

*Ten pieces in one palette. A capsule app's job is to show how far a set like this stretches.*

## Capsule Wardrobe Builder: start from a checklist

Most closet apps assume you already own the capsule. This one starts a step earlier. It comes with a list of more than 50 capsule essentials. Mark the ones you own, and what's left becomes your shopping list. A Stats button counts how many outfits your pieces make, and the Outfits tab holds over 500 combinations built from the recommended items. You can add your own photos, plan outfits on a calendar and mix looks in its Style Picker.

It's small, with 42 ratings and a 4.2 average. The last update landed in March 2026. Premium is $1.99 a month or $9.99 a year, and we found it on the App Store only.

## Pureple: capsule planning plus a big organizer

Pureple lists "capsule planning" among its features: curate the essentials, then mix and match. Around that sits a big organizer. You can filter the closet by season or occasion and save looks into lookbooks. Plan by day on the calendar, and trips get packing lists. An AI stylist suggests outfits from what you own and scores the looks you put together. Its try-on shows an outfit on a model, not on you, and the listing says it's "not a sizing tool".

Premium costs $6.99 a week, $14.99 a month or $89.99 a year. The ratings split: 3.9 from about 6,100 on the App Store, 2.5 on Google Play with more than 1M downloads.

## Fits: an AI stylist for a small closet

Fits names capsule wardrobes as a use case, though there's no capsule tool as such. Its AI stylist suggests outfits from your current clothes. Swipe through items to make your own, then put them on the calendar. When you add a piece, Fits detects its color and category for you, which saves tagging. A virtual try-on is listed too. Fits Pro costs $9.99, $29.99 or $59.99 on the US App Store, with AI credits sold separately. It's rated 4.6 from about 5,600 on iPhone and 4.7 on Google Play.

## Stylebook: pay once, count your wears

Stylebook doesn't use the word capsule. Its stats can still help you trim down to one: cost per wear shows which pieces earn their place, and an outfit calendar shows what you actually wear. Outfits get collaged on a canvas, and packing lists tell you which clothes to pack. For $4.99 once it's yours, with no in-app purchases listed, on iPhone and iPad only. One catch: the last update was in June 2025. We'd keep that in mind before loading a whole closet into it.

## TryAnyOutfit: test the gap before you fill it

A capsule usually has a gap or two: a coat, a pair of trousers, one color you're unsure of. We built TryAnyOutfit for the moment before you buy that piece. Upload a clear photo of yourself and the product image or a screenshot, and you get a preview of you wearing it. If the camel coat looks off next to your face, you've learned that before the order.

The app also keeps a digital wardrobe with an outfit calendar, and its AI stylist suggests outfits from the clothes you've saved. It won't build or count a capsule for you. Use it on your phone or in the [web studio](/tryon). Each try-on uses one credit: 5 for $2.99, 15 for $4.99 or 30 for $8.99, or plans of 20 try-ons for $7.99 a week or 50 for $14.99 a month. The [Style quiz](/quiz) and [Wardrobe quiz](/quiz2) are free.

*Plan the week from the capsule, then try any new piece on your photo first.*

A preview shows how a piece looks. It doesn't measure fit or choose a size, so check the retailer's size chart.

## How to set up a capsule in one of these apps

1. Pick a season and a target number of pieces. The app doesn't care what the number is, but having one keeps you honest.
2. Add only what you'd wear this season. Cladwell lets you pick items from its catalog or paste a product link instead of photographing each one.
3. Group them. In Cladwell that's a capsule; in Indyx it's a Collection.
4. Plan two weeks of outfits on the calendar. Pieces that never show up are the ones to cut.
5. Note the gaps, and try the candidates on your photo before you buy.

## Which capsule wardrobe app should you pick?

Pick Cladwell if you want the app to do the capsule thinking, with color season and outfits on your photo as extras. Indyx is the answer if you'd rather not pay, and it has human stylists for a one-off seasonal capsule. Building from nothing? Capsule Wardrobe Builder's checklist is the clearest starting point, even if it's a small app. And if you already know your capsule but not whether the next coat suits you, that's where we come in.
