# Amazon Virtual Try-On for Clothes: What It Covers and Alternatives

Amazon's virtual try-on for clothes is in the Amazon shopping app in the US: tap the button on an apparel product's first image and upload a photo of yourself. It only covers items sold on Amazon. For clothes elsewhere, Google Try it on and TryAnyOutfit are the alternatives.

Short answer: Amazon's virtual try-on for clothes lives in the Amazon shopping app in the US. On an apparel product page, you tap the Virtual Try-On button on the first product image, upload a photo of yourself, and Amazon's AI renders the item on you. It only works on Amazon listings, and like every try-on it shows the look, not the fit.

Handy, but narrow. A dress you found on Instagram won't get that button. Neither will a jacket from a brand's own site.

We make TryAnyOutfit, a try-on app, so count us as an interested party. Our view: if the item is sold on Amazon, Amazon's own button is the first thing we'd tap. The facts about Amazon below come from Amazon's own pages.

*Amazon's try-on works inside its own app. Your other tabs are another matter.*

## What Amazon's virtual try-on covers

Amazon runs a few different try-on features, and they work in different ways.

| Category | How it works | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Apparel | AI puts the item on a photo you upload | US, in the Amazon shopping app |
| Eyewear | Augmented reality on your live camera, every angle | Select brands in the US and Canada |
| Shoes | Point your phone camera at your feet (launched June 2022) | iOS app in the US and Canada at launch |
| Beauty | Augmented reality for lip colors and eyeshadow | Amazon shopping app |

*Four features, one rule: the item has to be sold on Amazon.*

The apparel one is the newest and the one most people mean. Amazon's FAQ says it's "available on apparel product pages in the U.S." and tells you to look for the button on the first product image. The FAQ doesn't say whether every listing gets the button, so if you don't see it, that item isn't set up for it.

Eyewear and shoes work differently. They use your live camera rather than a still photo, so you can turn your head or move your feet and look from several angles. Amazon announced the shoe version in June 2022 for the iOS app, with thousands of sneaker styles from brands such as New Balance and adidas.

## What happens to your photo

This part deserves two minutes before you upload anything. According to Amazon's FAQ:

- Your photo is processed by Amazon or its service providers to create an image or video of you wearing the style.
- Face measurements made during processing, which may count as biometric data in some places, are deleted within 24 hours.
- Uploaded photos and the styles you tried are stored until you delete them.
- Amazon may pick apparel styles and generate images of you wearing them. Those can show up across Amazon when you're logged in, for example on the Amazon.com homepage and in Alexa for Shopping.
- Amazon may make an AI-enhanced copy of your photo with the background swapped for a studio one.

You can view and delete all of this in Your Looks Gallery, and deleting your uploaded photos withdraws your consent. Only photos of yourself are allowed: no other people, no minors, no celebrities.

The fourth point is the one we'd flag. If you don't want Amazon dressing you in its own picks, check the gallery after you try something on.

## What happened to Prime Try Before You Buy?

It's gone. Prime Try Before You Buy let Prime members order clothes, try them at home for seven days and pay only for what they kept. An Amazon spokesperson told CNBC in January 2025 that it was being phased out effective January 31, 2025, because it only reached a limited number of items. The same statement named virtual try-on and personalized size recommendations among the AI features shoppers were turning to instead.

In other words, Amazon swapped a real at-home trial for a picture of you. The picture is quicker, but it can't tell you whether the waistband digs in. For that, there's still the size chart and the returns page. Our [try before you buy checklist](/blog/how-to-do-try-before-you-buy-0q5sMK) walks through both.

*The try-on can't measure anything. The tape measure can.*

## Where Amazon's try-on stops

Three limits matter in practice:

1. **Amazon items only.** The button sits on Amazon product pages. A dress from a boutique, a thrift listing or a screenshot from TikTok can't go through it.
2. **The app.** Amazon describes it as a feature of its shopping app. If you shop on a laptop, plan on picking up your phone.
3. **Look, not fit.** The FAQ describes the feature as a way "to visualize how it may look on you." It doesn't promise a size, and nothing in the FAQ says it reads your measurements to pick one.

None of these are flaws, exactly. Amazon built a feature to sell Amazon products. If that's where you shop, use it. It's free and already on your phone.

## Alternatives for clothes outside Amazon

**Google Try it on.** If you found the item through Google Search or Google Shopping, look for the Try it on button on the product. Google's help page limits it to clothing such as dresses and tops; lingerie and swimwear aren't supported. You have to be signed in and 18 or older, in one of 18 supported countries (the US is one). Sponsored products don't get the button. It's free, but only for items Google has marked as eligible. We compare it with our app in [TryAnyOutfit vs Google Try-On](/compare/tryanyoutfit-vs-google-try-on).

**TryAnyOutfit.** Upload a photo of yourself and any outfit image, whether that's a product photo, a store screenshot or a look you saved from social media, and see the clothes on you. That includes a screenshot of an Amazon listing that doesn't have the try-on button, as long as you're allowed to use the image. It runs on phones and in the browser at [tryanyoutfit.com/tryon](/tryon). A preview shows the look. It doesn't measure fit or choose a size, so check the retailer's size chart before you order. Credits are paid; see [pricing](/#pricing).

*Any product image works, including a screenshot from a store without a try-on button.*

## Which one should you use?

If you're shopping on Amazon from your phone in the US, tap Amazon's button first. It costs nothing. For a piece you found through Google, Google's button is the next stop. Everything else, from a brand site to a screenshot, needs a tool that accepts any image, and that's where we'd point you to TryAnyOutfit. Whichever you pick, the size chart still makes the final call.
